SHOUT OUTS!

CHS Welcomes Our New Vice Principal

I have wonderful news to share with our CHS community. After an extensive search, CHS is pleased to announce that Ms. Loukia Mastrodimos will be joining our admin team as our second vice-principal. Ms. Mastrodimos comes with experience both as a school administrator and a Career Technical Education teacher. Ms. Mastrodimos will be joining the team on Wednesday, October 30. Please come on out and meet her on Friday, November 2 at our Coffee with the CHS Admin Team.

The Importance of Pathways

Last week, AB 1240 was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom. This achievement means that schools across the state will now be required to report the number of students who have completed both the A-G course requirements for entrance into our public universities and a prescribed CTE sequence as part of their Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAPs). Prior to the law’s passage, schools were required to report separately the number of students completing CTE sequences from the number of students completing A-G requirements.

Building on the evidence of Linked Learning, the new metric recognizes and reinforces the value of preparing all students for success in the full range of possibilities in life after high school. It’s a win for excellence in education, for equity, and for the future of our state.

Enrollment Options Application Window

The Enrollment Options Online Application will open on October 1, 2019 and close on November 13, 2019. Parents have the opportunity to submit an online Enrollment Options application via the School Choice, Magnet, and Voluntary Enrollment Exchange Program (VEEP), by accessing the district website at www.sandiegounified.org/school-choice-application. The online application is available in English and Spanish and parents may identify up to three (3) schools of Choice.

RED RIBBON WEEK

On Thursday, student-athletes from the Clairemont football team and cheerleading squad put on a school-wide assembly for the students of Alcott Elementary. This last week was Red Ribbon Week and while the focus is typically on conversations of drug and alcohol prevention, our feeder elementary school heard from our student-athletes about healthy eating habits and the importance of exercise.

SAVE THE DATE

Halloween Costume Policy

Show your ASB school spirit and start making your Halloween costume plans now! Students may wear costumes on Thursday, October 31 only. They must follow the Halloween Costume Policy listed below:

  • Should be appropriate for school - not too skimpy or ornate
  • Minimal blood and gore
  • No full face make-up - must be able to identify the student
  • No masks
  • No weapons or weapon-like objects (wands, swords, guns, etc.)
  • Shoes must have a solid sole with closed heal and toes - no platforms, slippers, or sling-back shoes

If a student is inappropriately dressed, or costume is too distracting they will be asked to change. All Clairemont dress code rules apply.

Clairemont Parking Lot Update

CHS was notified by the Contractor currently working on the front planter that they will need to temporarily close down the south exit of our parking lot. The south exit will be closed on Monday, October 28th and will remain closed for approximately 2-3 weeks. CHS and District staff will be on site to support the flow of traffic. During this time, our two-lane main entrance will be repurposed into one lane for entry and one for exiting the parking lot. We appreciate your patience during construction. More information will be sent out as we approach the south exit closure.

SAY San Diego - Vaping Prevention

On Monday, Dec 9, Clairemont High School students will participate in a Vaping Prevention assembly put on by SAY San Diego.

“Vaping” is a term introduced by the electronic smoking device industry to refer to any electronic "vaporizer", such as E-cigs, Vapes, vape pens, vaporizers, and E-hookahs. The term can incorrectly lead people to believe that using electronic vaporizers produces a harmless water vapor, but in reality these devices produce potentially harmful aerosols that are inhaled into the lungs and exhaled into the environment. Students and staff will have the opportunity to hear the harmful effects of Vaping on their lungs and their bodies as well as listen to the harmful chemicals being used to make the liquid that teens put in their vaping pens, and listen to the latest data and findings of Vaping.

Because these companies are targeting our youth, we need to be proactive and educate students of the effects of these substances on their bodies, brains and their health in general.

On Tuesday December 10th, there will be a Parent Engagement meeting to follow up with parents on what students heard during the Vaping Education Presentation. All parents are welcome to come and get informed on the harmful effects of Vaping from our Community Partner, SAY SD's Alcohol, Tobacco, and Drug Prevention Team. Help CHS Earn Money For Our Athletics Program

Each month, schools receive funding for their athletic programs based on the amount of traffic to their sites. Last month, CHS ranked 49th in the entire state of California. We challenged you to help us grow traffic to our site and you delivered. On the most recent report, CHS ranked 21st in the entire state. This is fantastic news not only for our ability to market and celebrate the amazing things happening at CHS but to provide additional funding to support our scholar-athletes. Let's not stop there though. Please share out our CHSChieftains.com athletics website on your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Also, be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter as well. The links are posted above.

CHS Player's Creed

It is the mission of the CHS athletics program to teach our student-athletes principles that will guide them for the rest of their lives. CHS athletics isn't just about better athletes, but better people. That is why we are so excited to launch our new CHS Player's Creed (see below). In collaboration with the CHS Athletic Leadership council and various stakeholders, the CHS Player’s Creed was developed to outline what we believe it means to be a CHIEF. Every student participating in athletics at CHS, as well as their parent/guardian will be required to sign the CHS Student-Athlete Contract which states the following:

As a student-athlete at Clairemont High School you have the privilege of being part of a memorable and life changing experience. With this privilege comes great responsibility. Therefore, it is the expectation of the CHS admin team and Athletic Director that all who participate in athletics actively work to model character and integrity of the highest quality in the classroom, on the court/pool/field, and in our community. By signing this contract, you agree to strive to live a life worthy of emulating by exhibiting Courage, Humility, Integrity, Endurance, and Focus in all that you do.

ACADEMY INFO

AOB FRESHMEN AT THE MIRAMAR LANDFILL

On Thursday, October 17, the Freshmen in the Academy of Business had the chance to tour the Miramar Landfill. It was a great experience and helped our students gain a better understanding of the relationship between their daily actions and the impact those actions have on the Landfill. They learned about the City of San Diego's Zero Waste Initiative and gained a better understanding of solid waste reduction with the mission of moving towards a Zero Waste goal by 2040.
