Lesson 5
How does the landscape in other parts of the world compare to the landscape in San Diego?
The “This Land is Our Land” project connects a community of learners through observing the world we live in and sharing stories of where we come from. This project integrates Science, Social Studies, Technology, Art, and Ethnic Studies. Students use and create maps to describe the landscape that surrounds them. They learn about the history of San Diego and the first people to inhabit the land. Students interview their family members to learn about their own family history and the places they have lived. They connect their history to the landscape of the Earth and study the natural processes that make it change.
Students showcase the diversity of their community and the world by writing Where I’m From stories. Students’ stories are showcased in a class eBook and Google Map Presentation to invite students across San Diego to learn about their families and begin to develop a broader sense of the world and their place in it.
