What is Social Justice?

Social Justice (noun) is the practice of ally-ship and coalition work in order to promote equality, equity, respect, and the assurance of rights within and between communities and social groups. It is the capacity to organize with others to accomplish end results that benefit the whole community.

To "benefit the whole community," the practice and action of Social Justice should include:

  • Equal Rights

  • Equal Opportunity

  • Equal Treatment

In a democratic society, justice is for all.

Why is Social Justice Important?

According to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article I, "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood." At times, because of the systems that promote an imbalance of power, privilege, economic inequalities, as well as misrepresentations of core values, dignity, rights, and the spirit of brotherhood can be difficult to attain. Social Justice is an active reminder that we must intentionally work together to ensure that life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness can be equally attained by all living beings.
