(Proactive)
Begin class with a social activity (e.g., circles, icebreaker activities, check in activity)
Stand outside of the door to call students in and praise for being on time
Give out reinforcement for getting to class on-time (e.g., tickets that the students can trade in for free-time at the end of class)
Teach time management skills (e.g., use of watch or phone timer to keep track of time - set it to give a 1 minute warning)
Collaborate with the teacher of the previous class to provide reminders of getting to class on time or setting timer
Assign a preferred classroom job that requires the student to arrive on-time
(Consequence)
Create a goal with the student to increase frequency of arriving to class before the bell. Set a reward for meeting the goal. Provide praise each day that progress is made
If it is a group of students, create a class wide goal or table group competition to decrease tardiness (e.g., less than 5 tardies in a week/two week/month period for the whole class or table group with the least amount of tardies = pizza party)
Ignore late behaviors, but provide reinforcement when the student is on-time (e.g., verbal praise, positive phone call or note home)
