Acknowledge positive language

Take time at the beginning of semester to discuss and develop classroom expectations (include expectations of profanity use)

Teach alternative ways to express themselves

Set up parent/student/teacher meeting to discuss expectations

IGNORE PROFANITY

Praise and acknowledge another positive behavior they are demonstrating (e.g., staying seated, came to class on-time, turned in homework)

Redirect to the task (without acknowledging profanity)

Set up parent/teacher/student meeting to better understand expectations of language use at home and consequences. Share your classroom expectations and brainstorm home/school collaboration techniques to teach appropriate language skills
