(Proactive)
Begin class by reminding students of the community you have built in your classroom and of the supports available if anyone is having difficulty (e.g., assigned peer buddy, asking an adult in the room, assigned break area when frustrated, visuals of coping strategies)
Provide choices in output that are interesting to the student (e.g., record response or make a video, use of photography to show knowledge, create a blog)
Break assignments down into manageable parts and integrate breaks after each chunk
Shorten assignments to avoid frustration with difficult or non-preferred tasks
Allow for breaks in assigned area of the classroom when the task is frustrating. Teach the expectations for use of the break area (e.g., when you use it, how long, what you do when on your break, what behaviors are not allowed when in the break area)
Provide frequent check-in's during difficult tasks
Allow for the student to work with a group or with a teacher/adult in a small group to provide more scaffolding of the assignments
Preview the content the day before or review previously taught information (needed for the current task) before assigning work
Meet with the student or have a class meeting (circle) that discusses consequences for when tasks are not completed due to off-task behaviors (e.g., out of seat)
(Consequence)
Prompt the student to choose one of the supports available if they are having difficulty (see antecedent strategies for ideas)
Remind the student of the consequences for not completing the assigned task (e.g., finish during lunch or after school, phone call home to parent to make sure it is finished as homework) and follow through consistently
Have a 1:1 meeting with the student to review and reteach the support plan (e.g., use of peer buddy, raising hand to ask for help, assigned break area) and make any needed changes with the student's input
When there is a group of students with out of seat behavior, have a class circle/meeting to discuss behaviors and how they affect the class as a whole, then come up with a plan in which the whole class can support each other in order to stay in their seats and complete their work
