(Proactive)
Set up reinforcement/reward system for students to earn preferred activities for following classroom expectations when there is a sub
Review behavior expectations prior to the substitute coming (or periodically throughout the school year
Provide a copy of the behavior expectations to the substitute to review with the class prior to instruction
Provide a copy of individual behavior plans (that include praise and positive reinforcement) for substitute to review
Contact student's other teachers to let them know that there will be a sub in your class and so that they can also provide reminders or provide extra attention/praise for positive behaviors that day
Integrate opportunities for positive attention provided from the sub throughout class (e.g., add something personal to each student's name for when attendance is taken, set up opportunities for the student to be a leader or help with the review of material, have the student rate their own behavior and compare to the sub's report)
(Consequence)
Talk to the student individually (not in front of the class) about behavior expectations. Make the conversation brief and move quickly to what you expect of them.
Acknowledge the positive behaviors the sub noted to the whole class, provide reinforcement (e.g., extra free time at the end of class) for those who followed behavior expectations
Provide class wide reinforcement for when there are no negative reports from sub (e.g., class game that builds community, free time at the end of class)
