(Proactive)
Start class with opportunity for the student to share with the class
Provide opportunities to allow the student to participate on-task (e.g., lead the review of previously learned information, share their answers)
Teach and review periodically classroom expectations for what students need to do when they would like to talk with an adult/peer or share with the class
Create a system (flip card, on/off light) that cues the student of when it is ok to talk and when it is not an appropriate time to talk
(Consequence)
Ignore talking that is off-task and acknowledge talking that is on-task
Remove peers around the student that reinforce or acknowledge the excessive talking
Use non-verbal cues or remind the student of expectations away from peers (to minimize attention for talking)
Provide frequent praise and attention when the student is working quietly or following instruction quietly
