(Proactive)
Leave positive notes with the students that has at least one positive thing they did the day before (leave it on their desk for when they walk in)
Set up a routine with reinforcement integrated
Start the class with relationship building activities that allow the students to participate
Give the student a role in the classroom that allows them to feel a part of the community
Have visual supports throughout the classroom that remind students of classroom expectations (co-construct with the students)
(Consequence)
Address concerns privately (avoid having an audience)
Provide unconditional positive regard (e.g., if the student is making hurtful comments, respond with "I'm sorry that you are feeling that way. I want you to know that when you are ready, I am here for you and we can work on this together")
Divert the student's attention to a different topic that is related to the task you are working on
Give the student an option to get out of conflict (e.g., if the student is seeking attention from peers by asserting power, give them the power by asking if there is anything that you can do to earn their cooperation)
