Listening Project

Goal: Hear from all community members (stakeholders) to better understand the needs, wants, and assets of the community as a whole.

Purpose: Identify the most important areas of growth/need in the community in order to form working groups of interested stakeholders who can engage in direct action as well as the allocation of resources to address the prioritized need.

Process: Engage in a series of focus groups as well as surveys and one-on-one conversations to ensure multiple data-points are garnered from all educational partners (students, parents, staff/teachers, and community partners) regarding their chief concerns for the community as well as highlight actions that they may be willing to take within the community schools work.

Here at Hoover, we rolled out our needs and assets assessment by first going after the staff. After onboarding the staff, we were then able to leverage the buy-in from the staff to push out our needs and assets assessment for our students. For us, we focused on utilizing ELA/ELD classroom teachers to run focus groups as well as push out surveys within their classes. For the planning and implementation purposes, the site coach took lead on the structures and protocols of the student and staff groups while the community schools coordinator took lead on engaging the parent/guardian and community partner voices.
