This week, we will learning about how to encode messages.  Let's think about something we may have already encoded.

1. In order to encrypt a message, the programmer followed several steps.  Can you repeat the steps in your own words?  Use words like "encode," "key," and "add" as you share.

2. In order to decrypt a message, the programmer also followed several steps.  Can you repeat the steps in your own words?  Use words like "encrypted message,"  "key," and "subtract" as you share.

1. Work with a partner; each of you should have your own device.

2. Open the Week 1 Hyperdoc.

3. Follow step 1 on the worksheet to encrypt a message.

4. Follow steps 2, 3 and 4 on the worksheet to create your encrypted message.

5. Show your partner your encrypted message AND your shift key.  

6. Ask your partner for their encrypted message and key.

7. Use the decryption worksheet to decrypt your partner's message.

8. With your partner, think about the following questions:

   • Can you think of other ways a message can become a secret message?

   • How would you experiment to decrypt a message without knowing the shift key?
