David Bingham, James Gage, Landon Stuckey, and Wes Rogan all posted significant Personal Records (PRs) this weekend, but the most improved on the team was Grayson Stanifer, who dropped over three and a half minutes. Stanifer is over a minute a mile faster than he was at our Campus Invite, which is massive progress. The progress of Stanifer and all of the boys is exciting to see, and we're proud of the hard work and mental focus that has gotten them there.
At Rambling Rock, the Varsity B squad was led by freshman James Gage. His time of 17:22 is outstanding and qualifies him for his varsity letter. His time is also one second slower than the freshman PR of a notable graduate: Kevin Hall.
For Gage to be running this fast in early September gives us hope that he may crack the top-ten all-time list for freshmen.
On a cross country team, there are always a lot of kids that know how to and enjoy working hard. Among the hardest workers on our team this year is Archie Patterson. The work is paying off as Archie had an outstanding performance at just about every competition this year, including his first sub-19:00 performance on Saturday at Rambling Rock.
His success this summer and fall in workouts and races has been a real highlight of the year so far.
We raced ten at the Brett Clements Invite at Bath Middle School, and the boys finished 2nd behind the current #1 ranked team in Michigan.
Most of the boys posted all-time and season PRs. There is a lot of preparation and mental effort behind those smiles, but all of that training across the past 9 months and all the focus of the last 3.1 miles brought about a result to be very excited about.
"I was really tired and very weak. I somehow found the energy. I wanted it really bad."
Jake Szalay was not well Saturday morning, but he posted one of his best times ever on the muddy course at Bath. There are certain things you cannot coach, and here's a an example: wanting so badly to perform for your team, that you'll overcome illness to get the job done.
In the first race of the year, there are a lot of athletes to be excited about, and one of those is J. Cole. He has consistently found success and fun in his workouts and races this summer and fall. His ability to see the good and the bad in each of his races assures us that he'll continue to develop. And as the third-best seventh-man in all of Michigan, he is a key part of our team's success.
There's a lot to be proud of here.
On Monday, athletes are invited to join their teammates for a pasta dinner. Info was included in last week's and this week's Weekly Update (check your emails for what to bring).
On Tuesday, all athletes will compete at SEC Jamboree #1, our first competition that will impact final conference standings. Athletes riding the bus will be dismissed at 1:45 on Tuesday. Athletes in the reserve race that are self transporting should remain in school until the end of the school day.
Please note: Athletes must be at the team tent at least 1 hour before their scheduled start time. Athletes that arrive late, regardless of reason, may be held out of the race. If you are driving, please leave plenty of time to make that work out. The easiest option is for athletes to ride the bus.
