Read the chapter summary below:
Summary
■ Sometimes, another system’s fault (bad starting motor, defective battery, computer failure, or faulty wiring) will appear to be caused by problems in the charging system.
■ There are four common symptoms of charging system problems: dead battery, overcharged battery, abnormal noises, and an indicator showing a problem.
■ A preliminary inspection of the components and connections will help determine the source of the charging system problem.
■ Take the necessary precautions when working on a charging system to prevent possible damage to electrical/electronic systems.
■ Charging system tests should be done when symptoms point to low alternator voltage and current. Common charging system tests include the scan tool voltage readings, load test, scope tests, voltmeter test, and circuit resistance tests.
■ A bad alternator will show up as a low voltage and current output problem during charging system tests. This may be caused by a bad alternator rotor, bad alternator stator, bad alternator diodes, worn alternator bearings, or worn alternator brushes.
■ The most common problems with an HV charging system include the following: bad HV PCM, bad motor-generator, failed hybrid control module, loose or corroded HV power cables, and a bad HV battery.
