AP English Language and Composition

Welcome to AP Language and Composition! This course will prepare students college courses in English Composition by making demands upon them equivalent to those of a yearlong introductory college course. The purpose of this course is to help students “write effectively and confidently in their college courses across the curriculum and in their professional and personal lives” (The College Board, AP English Course Description, p. 6).

Course Description:

The AP English Language and Composition course is organized according to the requirements and guidelines of the current AP English Course Description; therefore, students are expected to read critically, think analytically, and communicate clearly in both writing and speech. Students will be exposed to a variety of nonfiction and fiction texts from a wide range of authors and historical contexts and they will be expected to analyze these texts in depth. The reading and writing assignments will include exercises to provide practice in rhetoric, argumentation, and synthesis. Students will examine how writers craft arguments and what techniques make for particularly effective rhetoric. Students will study stylistic elements in order to develop mature writing styles using diction, syntax, tone, and audience to communicate with mature readers. To this end, students will produce multiple drafts of papers, and they will receive feedback from peers and the instructor. Evaluation of student work will be objective, based on rubrics and other universally accepted criteria for written work.
