There is no maximum number of players per team.
Players may be students, teachers, or staff.
Every player must belong to the Priory assigned to that team.
Students, teachers, and staff from other Priories are not eligible, even if they are members of the same House.
Priory assignments are listed on the official Intramural website.
Players may not substitute for another Priory.
Players may only participate for their assigned Priory team.
Varsity athletes are eligible unless specifically restricted by the Intramural Director.
The use of an ineligible player may result in a forfeit.
The Director of Intramurals has final authority on all eligibility questions.
The number of players on the court will be determined by the Intramural Director before the season.
Teams may have additional players available as substitutes.
Every player present should have an opportunity to participate.
Substitutions may occur between rounds or during dead-ball situations as directed by the referee.
Games begin 10 minutes after the class before lunch ends.
Captains meet with the referees before the game.
Each team starts with an equal number of dodgeballs.
On the referee's signal, players may retrieve the balls.
Players may not cross the center line.
Eliminate all players on the opposing team.
A player is eliminated when:
Hit by a live ball before it touches the ground.
Their thrown ball is caught before touching the ground.
They commit a violation that results in an out.
The last team with players remaining wins the round.
A ball is LIVE when it has been thrown and has not touched the ground or another object.
A ball is DEAD when it:
Hits the ground.
Hits a wall, ceiling, or other object.
Is caught.
Leaves the playing area.
A player is out if:
A live ball hits them before touching the ground.
A live ball hits their clothing and then touches the ground.
Their thrown ball is caught by an opponent.
They step over the center line.
They intentionally interfere with play after being eliminated.
Intentional headshots are prohibited. Referees may issue an out or additional penalty for dangerous or intentional throws toward the head.
A player who catches a live ball before it touches the ground eliminates the thrower.
The ball must be clearly controlled by the catcher.
A ball that touches the ground before being caught does not count.
Players may not use another ball as a shield to make a catch.
Players may use a ball in their hands to block an incoming throw.
The blocking ball must remain under control.
If the incoming ball knocks the blocking ball out of the player's hands, the player is out.
Players may not intentionally use another player as a shield.
Players must remain inside the court.
Stepping outside the boundary may result in an out.
Players may not cross the center line.
Players may not leave the court to avoid being hit or retrieve a ball.
Players may not intentionally hold a ball indefinitely.
Teams must make a reasonable attempt to play the ball.
Referees may issue a 5-second warning if a team is intentionally delaying play.
Failure to play the ball after the warning may result in loss of possession.
Dodgeball is a non-contact sport.
Players may NOT:
Push
Shove
Grab
Trip
Tackle
Intentionally hit another player with their body
Intentional physical contact may result in an immediate ejection.
Fighting, threatening, excessive taunting, abusive behavior, or dangerous play may result in:
Immediate ejection
Loss of the round
Additional disciplinary action
Repeated misconduct may result in removal from future Intramural games.
A team wins a round when all opposing players are eliminated.
If multiple rounds are played, the team winning the most rounds wins the game.
The Intramural Director will announce the number of rounds before play begins.
Teams must have enough eligible players to meet the minimum number required to begin play.
If a team is not ready 15 minutes after the bell, the game may be forfeited.
Using an ineligible player may result in an automatic forfeit.
Forfeits count as official losses.
Games end 2–5 minutes before the first bell, at the referee's discretion.
The Intramural Director will attempt to give a 2-minute and 1-minute warning.
Referees control the official ending of the game.
Referees are responsible for:
Calling outs
Calling catches
Managing boundaries
Enforcing violations
Managing time
Maintaining player safety
Controlling the game
Referee decisions are final during play.
Players must return all dodgeballs and equipment.
The winning team should help leave the playing area clean.
Referees submit the final result and game MVP to the Intramural Director.
THE DIRECTOR OF INTRAMURALS HAS FINAL SAY ON ALL RULES, DISPUTES, ELIGIBILITY QUESTIONS, AND DISCIPLINARY MATTERS.
