Teams consist of 8 players maximum.
Games are played 5 vs. 5.
A team must have at least 4 players to start. Fewer than 4 = forfeit.
Priory assignments are listed on the official Intramural website.
Players from other priories may not substitute, even if they are in the same House.
Varsity basketball players are not eligible for Intramurals.
Every player present must play.
The use of an illegal or ineligible player results in an automatic forfeit.
Games begin 10 minutes after the class before lunch ends.
Captains meet with the officials before the game.
The game begins with a jump ball.
Teams must be ready to play when the game starts.
Games are 5 vs. 5.
Games are played using a running clock.
The referee may stop the clock for:
Injuries
Free throws
Timeouts
Serious fouls
Other situations at the referee's discretion
There are no full-court press restrictions unless announced by the Intramural Director before the game.
Substitutions may be made during dead-ball situations with the referee's permission.
Free throw = 1 point
Field goal = 2 points
Three-point shot = 3 points
The ball must completely leave the shooter's hand before the player lands on the three-point line for the shot to count as a three.
Players may not:
Push
Hold
Trip
Hit
Hand-check
Charge illegally
Make excessive or unnecessary contact
Normal basketball contact is allowed when players are legitimately competing for position.
The referee has final judgment on whether contact is a foul.
Shooting fouls result in free throws when applicable.
Non-shooting fouls result in a possession for the offended team unless the team is in the bonus.
Excessive or intentional contact may result in an unsportsmanlike foul or ejection.
Teams enter the bonus after 7 team fouls in a half.
Once in the bonus, the opposing team receives free throws for qualifying defensive fouls.
The Intramural Director may modify the bonus structure before a season begins.
Players may not take illegal steps while holding the ball.
A player may not:
Double dribble
Carry/palming the ball
Travel
Kick the ball intentionally
The referee will determine whether a violation occurred.
A player is out of bounds when any part of their body touches the boundary line or the area outside the court.
The ball is out of bounds when it touches:
The boundary line
The floor outside the court
A player who is out of bounds
Any object outside the court
Possession is awarded to the opposing team.
No shot clock will be used unless provided by the Intramural Director.
Teams are expected to make a legitimate attempt to score.
Deliberately holding the ball or stalling may result in a referee-issued warning or turnover.
Players may play man-to-man or zone defense.
Defenders may not intentionally use excessive contact.
No player may intentionally prevent an opponent from moving by holding, grabbing, or pushing.
Players may not intentionally kick or throw the ball at an opponent.
Fighting, threatening, abusive behavior, or intentional physical contact may result in:
Technical foul
Free throws
Possession
Ejection
A player receiving two technical/unsportsmanlike fouls is automatically ejected.
Any player ejected from multiple games may be removed from the roster and/or become ineligible for playoffs.
Referees and the Intramural Director have discretion regarding discipline.
Technical fouls may be issued for:
Arguing excessively with officials
Taunting
Profanity directed at another person
Delaying the game
Unsportsmanlike behavior
Hanging on the rim unnecessarily
Leaving the bench during an altercation
The referee determines the penalty for a technical foul.
Teams must have at least 4 eligible players ready to play.
If a team does not have the minimum number of players 15 minutes after the bell, the game is forfeited.
Using an ineligible player results in an automatic forfeit.
Forfeits count as official losses.
Games end 2–5 minutes before the first bell, at the referee's discretion.
The Intramural Director will attempt to give a 2-minute and 1-minute warning.
Referees control the official ending of the game.
If the game is tied:
The teams play sudden-death overtime.
The first team to score wins.
The referee may begin overtime with a jump ball or possession determined by the game's possession arrow.
Overtime may be shortened or modified if necessary because of the school schedule.
Referees are responsible for:
Fouls
Violations
Scoring
Possession
Game clock
Player conduct
Maintaining game control
Players and captains are expected to respect all referee decisions.
Arguing a call will not change the call.
The winning team is responsible for leaving the court clean and returning any Intramural equipment.
Referees must submit:
Final score
Game MVP
to the Intramural Director immediately after the game.
THE DIRECTOR OF INTRAMURALS HAS FINAL SAY ON ALL RULES, DISPUTES, ELIGIBILITY QUESTIONS, AND DISCIPLINARY MATTERS.
