For my major project development, I pushed myself to think creatively and experimentally. Next term I will be using Project Based Learning (PLR) do delve into the inner workings of my mind during panic attacks, and the internal dialogue that I occurs when I have to argue against my internal critic.
The driving statement behind this project will be:
//
Can aesthetics of despair safely encourage conversations around trauma, and increase compassion for the experience of suffering ?
//
As I am still in the developmental stage of this project, I have been experimenting a lot with ways to trigger sounds and lights from audience inputs. I have familiarised myself with some options from arduino kits, MaxForLive packs, Piezo sensors, and DMX lighting outputs.
It was a huge help having Tyler Solleder and Ben Walsh give guest lectures, as they helped me navigate through problems I wouldn't have been able to solve on my own, and secondly provide the inspiration and support to create a human experience that is unique and personal.
Of course I still have a long way to go, but the foundation of the idea is there, and I have a working prototype of how I would like the installation to run.
Over the next term, I will flesh out multiple narratives and lighting cues to build a rich sensory experience, possibly outsourcing to others who wish to share a section of their story.
I created the music behind the add for Bronte, Hayley and Rachels TVC for the local brand Two In The Sun.
I composed 5 minutes of music for Byron Youth Service's weekly radio show: YAC Radio. The show was put on air in September.
The story of this show details how the Links 2 Learning group at BYS put together a Lotus for the 2021 Brunswick Heads Sculpture Walk.
This term I spent too much of my time trying to get a head start in my career as a creative practitioner, without putting in the ground work in my studies at SAE. My teachers have told me mulitple times that I need to learn to say no, but it has been a challenging term because of the amazing opportunities that have come my way.
I ran my first freelance show at the Murwillumbah Hall for the local dance school Dancetasia, with help from Sophie Ryder.
I stared recording young artists through the Kick Back @ the YAC program. This will lay the ground work for future artists to have their live recordings played on the radio.
I also began working as a Sound Engineer at the Beach Hotel, and have had honourable mentions of the excellence of the lighting show's I've been supporting artists with. My favourite performance so far was from my class mate, Jayden Bloch.
As much as I believe it is imperative to be putting my own work first, these opportunities were so special to me, that it was hard to turn any of these down. I do understand though, that in the future, I will need to focus more on my own work as a creative practitioner, so that I can become a leader and motivator, like those that are teaching me at the moment.
I am truly grateful to have such an extended network of endless talent, but in particular, it has been something else working under James Lyall.
James helped me see that I needed to accept my music production style for what it is - (outstanding), and not let any external judgement prevent me from being me. I was truly lucky to be able to sit down with such a talented educator and hear these words, and receive such a praise.
I will never forget the lessons he brings to class, the opportunities he creates with his connections, and pure joy that follows him everywhere he goes.
Every student at SAE is blessed with the knowledge and kindness that is shared at our Byron Bay Campus. It will be sad to think next term will be my last, so I will continue to try to cherish every single moment, and not let it pass too quickly.
