The 23rd Annual UCI Community College Honors Research Conference will be held on March 25, 2023. This submission site is for currently enrolled Irvine Valley College students who wish to apply to present at the conference.
To apply to the conference, submit the application by Monday, December 12, 2022 at 11:59 p.m. The application will appear at the bottom of the screen after you click on the Submit button and create an account as prompted. As part of the application, you must submit the following:
A title for your presentation
A 25-word description of your research project
A 250-word abstract of your research project
3-5 scholarly sources used in your research, properly formatted according to MLA or APA format
Types of Presentations
Research in any discipline is welcome, as are creative performances. Students may participate in at most TWO different types of presentations:
One oral presentation or performance
One poster presentation
A student cannot present two presentations on the same topic.
Abstracts
Abstracts should be 200-250 words. Information in the abstract should include the following:
a description of the research topic, question, hypothesis, and/or purpose
an explanation of the research methods used
a discussion of the implications/conclusions drawn or anticipated
some key supporting evidence with in-text citations
other information deemed relevant by the applicant
The abstract can cite anywhere from 1-3 sources; it does not need to cite ALL of the sources you include in your source list.
For sample research abstracts and other conference information, please see the HTCC Conference Website.
Rules for Group Presentations
One "corresponding author" should submit the conference application. Submit only one application per group. The corresponding author is responsible for all communications related to the conference.
Faculty Mentor
Research projects must be mentored by one or more faculty members, and the abstract should be reviewed and approved for submission by the faculty mentor. In your application, you will identify the name, institutional affiliation, and email address of primary and (if relevant) secondary faculty mentor(s). If you are mentored by someone other than an IVC faculty member, the IVC Honors Program Director will contact them for explicit permission for you to present at the conference.
Eligibility Requirements
Conference participation is limited to students currently enrolled in at least 3 units at Irvine Valley College with a GPA of 2.5 or above and who have purchased an ASIVC sticker; or to students that have obtained the permission of the Honors Program Director.
Submission Process
The IVC Honors Program Director, Dr. Emily Liu, will review all submitted IVC abstracts for content, format, and quality of writing. Abstracts that are substandard in content or writing or that are missing references will not be accepted. Dr. Liu will submit abstracts to the Honors Transfer Council of California (HTCC) in December 2022. Applicants should check their email regularly up until the time they receive notification from Dr. Liu that their abstract has been submitted to the HTCC system. Failure to respond to an email query may invalidate an application. Applicants will receive notification from the conference organizers by late January 2023 about whether their abstract has been accepted. If you have any questions, email eliu@ivc.edu.
When you click on the "Submit" button, you will be prompted to create an account. After you create your account, you will be able to access the application form.
