Lent is not an event. It is not something that happens to us. It is at most a microcosm of what turns out to be a lifelong journey to the centre of the self.
Invite Us Deeper
Almighty and ever living God,
you invite us deeper into your world, your people, your Lent.
May this time be one of outward focus;
seeking you in those we often ignore.
Help us live a Lent focused on freedom, generosity, and encounter.
Give us hearts hungry to serve you
and those who need what we have to give.
Amen.
Hello everyone,
As we say goodbye to Summer and hello to Autumn we begin to notice the beautiful changes happening around us. I always find it sad to say goodbye to the warmer months but I do love the chance to rug up and get ready for footy season!
This month we have been focusing on establishing our school wide positive expectations and behaviour norms. Our students have reviewed our behaviour pathway plan and have developed a deeper understanding about the behaviours we need to engage in to ensure all members of our community feel safe and respected at school. I have been really proud of the way our students have taken this plan on and have demonstrated a greater sense of self responsibility and respect for others and our environment.
The month of March (and into April) has also seen our Year 5 students receive their First Eucharist. Our students engaged beautifully in the sacramental program and we congratulate them all on this very special occasion.
This week coming is one of the most important on our school calendar; preparing for Holy Week. We thank our senior students for preparing and sharing the Holy Week liturgy with our school community this week. This time to reflect on the last hours of Jesus' life on earth is one of the most important traditions at St Alipius Parish School. As we come out of two years of uncertainty it is wonderful that we can find certainty again in our liturgy. It grounds us and reminds us of the sacrifice God made for us, in order for us to live fully and freely.
I am so looking forward to gathering with you all for our family picnic on Wednesday 6th April. It has been a long time since we've been able to gather on the school turf for a family event. Feel free to bring a picnic blanket or chairs and some food and drinks. Daylight savings will be finished by then so we will start from 4:45pm to be able to catch some sun before the day ends.
I wish you all a safe and happy Easter holiday break. I hope you are all able to find some time to relax and catch your breath after a busy first term.
Take care,
Emily
Over the past 40 years, the number of children who are physically active every day has significantly dropped. In the 1970s, eight out of ten students rode or walked to school but today that number has dropped to just two out of ten.
National Ride2School Day is Australia’s biggest celebration of active travel and one of the best days on the school calendar.
The day has helped thousands of schools to empower and enable students to get physically active on their journey to school, giving them the opportunity to create healthy habits for their future. Not to mention the FABULOUS community connections this brilliant opportunity create for our St Alipius families and friends.
We are learning to identify and produce rhyming words.
To celebrate Clean Up Australia Day, we read Benny Bangarra’s Big Bush Clean Up and took a pledge to be more responsible with our rubbish.
We have enjoyed imaginative play through our investigation areas, like our Vet and Cafe.
We were visited by some Australian animals for our learning in Science. We were even lucky enough to pat them.

We went down to the oval to be amongst nature. We experienced the Wonder & Awe of Creation through our wonderful & awesome discoveries.
Our fossicking started us on our way to a cognitive play & storytelling approach to retrieving information about our latest novel study.
Some of the connections we made to our novels, as we fossicked, included:
• dried old leaves alongside new fresh leaves, symbolising the contrast & progression of the garden ‘or piece of earth’ in the The Secret Garden
• a large wooden branch like the pipe in Matilda
• a feather like the wings of the eagle mentioned in The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe.
Learning to make Oobleck in Science was such fun! We learnt about liquids and solids, and experimented with creating the right consistency of oobleck to meet the criteria of our experiment.
In Physical Education (Sport), we are learning kicking and the dynamic movements that are involved in Australian Rules Football and other ball sports.
We are learning to compare 6 digit numbers using the greater than/less than or equal to symbol.
2022 is the Year of Visual Arts at St Alipius. In the 1/2 Learning Community, we grew sunflowers in our garden and we have used this provocation to inspire our sunflower artwork!
We are creating an art piece in the style of Georges Seurat.
The Year 6 Learning Community welcomed Brendan, from the Ballarat Police Force, to speak about bike and helmet safety in preparation for Ride to School day led by our Year 6 students.
Creating some tessellations using 2D shapes!
This year, we are trialling a buddy system between our Year 5 Learning Community and our Foundation Learning Community. It is hoped that forming these special connections will enable our Foundation students to carry these connections over to Year 1 and have a buddy for two years! Right now, we are getting to know each other, together. Shortly we will pair students up to form even deeper connections with each other.
We are conducting a novel study. By next week each student will achieve their goal of reading 100% of a novel. We know that reading a whole novel requires stamina and persistence; students have accessed their text in various ways to achieve success. We feel very proud at this point in the term because at the beginning of the term completing a novel felt like we were about to climb a mountain, but now that we are at the top of the mountain - the view is amazing!
The term 'learning dispositions', sometimes called 'habits of mind' or 'dispositions to learning', refer to the way in which learners engage in and relate to the learning process.
Learning dispositions affect how students approach learning and therefore the outcomes of their learning.
Here are our Learner Dispositions represented in a visible way. Thanks Gabrielle (Foundation LC teacher) for creating this resource.
Here's a visual / VISIBLE representation of the 'Memory Trace' / neural pathways before learning up to learning mastery!

On the 4th & 5th May, Suzie (Learning Support Officer) attended Youth Mental Health First Aid Accredited Training. We look forward to integrating this learning into the suite of Wellbeing services and strategies provided at St Alipius.
Youth Mental Health First Aid training equips people with the knowledge and confidence to approach or respond to students who may need information or support. The impact of that first supportive conversation for any individual, and in particular a young person, in a time of need can be profound.
