REMOTE LEARNING 5.0
Update from the Principal: Eileen Rice
July T3 2021
At St Alipius, we understand that learning is developmental and that all students progress at various stages and phases in their learning. Learner dispositions support us to embed the skills of an effective learner at any stage or phase in the process of learning.
What are learner dispositions?
The term 'learning dispositions', sometimes called 'habits of mind' or 'dispositions to learning', refer to the way in which learners engage in and relate to the learning process. Learning dispositions affect how students approach learning and therefore the outcomes of their learning.
Here are the 5 learner dispositions we will embed into our professional and educational practice at St Alipius.
[NSW Government website.]
An Inquisitive Learner shows interest in the world they live in. They are not afraid to ask questions, find answers or create solutions. They want to explore and discover new things.
A Reflective Learner is able to think about their learning, ask worthwhile questions, seek feedback and take steps to improve their knowledge and skills.
A Collaborative Learner plays their part in a team to work towards a common goal.
They recognise individual qualities of others and the importance of sharing and respecting different points of view.
A Persistent Learner spends extra time and effort on tasks and doesn't give up easily when faced with difficulties.
A Creative Learner is able to think broadly and deeply to come up with original ideas and solutions to problems.
The 3/4 learning community set with a challenge of designing and creating their very own Olympic Torch.
They followed the design process of:
1. Researching past Olympic Torches
2. Planning out a creative idea on paper
3. Creating their own 3D model
4. Sharing their work with their peers
Here are some of the final results.
Science exploration in 3/4!!

Charlie's video: We are learning to read and extract information to create an informative quiz.
Abel's video: reading & writing exercise - 'the important things in life.'
In an attempt to provide some screen free and 'just for fun' options each afternoon, the year 6 students were tasked with a series of challenges to repurpose ordinary everyday objects into creative new representations. This required critical & creative thinking by our students. Our first item was 'bread'.
Our students are working in dynamic groups to apply their learning about biological science in a creative, collaborative, persistence, reflective and inquisitive way. Students are learning the structure and processes involved in drafting and finalising a cover letter in order to gain employment as one of our 'World Creators!'
Here are two examples from our pre-assessment (DRAFT stage), prior to our learning taking place. We are now expanding our understanding of cover letter writing to include particular formalities, opening statements and strategies to specifically address application criteria.
