O God of Creation, you have blessed us with the changing of the seasons.
As we welcome the autumn months,
may the earlier setting of the sun
remind us to take time to rest.
May the brilliant colors of the leaves
remind us of the wonder of your creation.
May the steam of our breath in the cool air
remind us that it is you who give us the breath of life.
May the harvest from the fields remind us of the abundance we have been given and bounty we are to share with others.
May the dying of summer's spirit remind us of your great promise that death is temporary and life is eternal.
We praise you for your goodness forever and ever.
Amen

T1, Week 7 & 8
Dear families,
In 2021 St Alipius proudly celebrates 168 years of Catholic Education in Ballarat East. Over this year we also celebrate 200 years of Catholic Education in Australia.
We have been formed as a community by the Gospel that inspires us and by the community that we live and learn within. We look forward to celebrating many aspects of life in Catholic Education at St Alipius this year.
The front page of yesterday’s Courier recognised the leadership our students have shown in organising our annual ‘Ride to School Day’ today. We had a busy morning riding, scooting and walking to school. Thanks to our Year 6 leaders and teachers for making this event possible.
The term is flying by under our feet and we still haven’t had the chance to gather as a community. Early next term we will have a liturgy to recognise our 2021 school year and to officially bless our new window - we hope that we can make this day an ‘Open School’ day so that all families can gather and celebrate with us.
School photos went off splendidly yesterday morning - thank you so much for supporting your children in looking gorgeous wearing our full school uniform. We can’t wait to see the results.
Please don’t hesitate to call or email if you have any questions about your child and their learning. We are always keen to work in partnership with you.
Regards,
Eileen
As we prepare for the most holy and solemn
occasion of the Church year - the passion and
death of Jesus and the hope of the Resurrection
- we are called to remember the last hours of
Jesus’ life on earth.
And, as is our custom, we shall reflect on the
Events of Holy Week with a special liturgy on:
Thursday, 1st April.
May you find the Easter season a time of love,
hope and transformation.
This week, our Whole School Prayer celebrates Harmony Day, which is nationally recognised this Sunday March 21st. Led by students from Grade Five and the Grade Four students celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation from Belinda’s Learning Community, our prayer is based on the ongoing theme of Harmony Day, which is, 'Everyone Belongs'.
In the spirit of harmony, you might wish to contemplate the following prayer:
God of Peace,
If there is to be peace in the world
There must be peace in the nations.
If there is to be peace in the nations
There must be peace in the cities.
If there is to be peace in the cities
There must be peace between neighbours.
If there is to be peace between neighbours
There must be peace in the home.
If there is to be peace in the home
There must be peace in the heart.
Amen
We ask, too, that you hold the students of Grade Four in your prayers, as they prepare to celebrate their First Reconciliation this coming Tuesday 23rd March.
In the last newsletter, we touched upon learning dispositions with you. St Alipius is still currently working through a process of determining what dispositions we believe are important to cultivate in our children. We will continue to liaise with families in this process, as we value your input. This process may take some time as we consider, reflect and consult.
Why the focus on learning dispositions?
As part of our Visible Learning professional development, staff have further explored learning dispositions and the links of these to effective learning. As a reminder: a learning disposition is a characteristic or attitude to learning that are developed into life-long skills. Learning dispositions could include cooperation, creativity, problem solving, inventiveness - just to name a few.
There is an abundance of academic research that shows a direct link between positive learning dispositions (yes, there can be negative ones!) and the positive impact these have on learning. For example, the evidence shows that children who persevere when learning is difficult show more positive learning growth. As a community we aim to work together to identify which ones we consider the most important, and the ones that will have the most impact on our children’s learning.
How can you help at home?
In class, children have begun discussing learning dispositions with their teachers. You are welcome to join in this conversation at home. At school, we watched the Pixar video “Piper” and explored with the children some of the learning dispositions that the baby sandpiper had to use in learning something new. You may wish to watch this (again) with your child/ren and explore learning dispositions with them. The link is: https://vimeo.com/341077341
We look forward to continued conversations with you about learning dispositions at St Alipius!
Our driving question in Foundation is "Who am I? Who are You? Who are We?" We have been looking at this driving focus as a part of everything we do and as we look at ourselves as learners. Investigation Time has been a time when we have been able to share things about ourselves in our own ways. These are some of the creations students come up with. They have been able to share what their name is and a smart (something they are good at, a strength they have). This has been such a great way for us to make new friends and learn things about each other.
During Science, in the Foundation Learning Community, we have been making observations using our senses. We made coloured powder by mixing, heating and crushing using our sense of touch.
In Science, we have been learning how to classify gases, liquids and solids.
Sienna and Ivy were interview by ABC News this week in relation to Ride to School Day. As part of the leadership focus in Year 6, students have the opportunity to engage in the organisation and coordination of key events in school life and as a result, these students reached out to ABC News. The intention behind contacting local news and media outlets is to promote and share this important initiative and to highlight St Alipius commitment to safety, in particular, safety when riding or scooting.
During Science, in the Year 5 Learning Community, we have been exploring the way solids, liquids and gases can change under different situations. We made coloured powder by adding heat to a liquid.
We are checking our handwriting against the Success Criteria. Part of making learning visible is to understand and identify the steps to success. This is a valuable tool in empowering learners to monitor their progress and achievement.
As part of our ethics learning, we are learning about stereotyping, discrimination and prejudice. We have been asked to order these people based on their intelligence. This group are having a very in depth conversation about how people can naturally judge people for the way they look.
We have made our own game boards to show what we have learnt about number and place value.
This week we watched a Pixar animation about a bird called Piper. We discussed some of the learning skills or dispositions the little bird needed in order to survive. We then reflected on the dispositions each of us need in order to be good learners. Some of the dispositions we discussed were bravery, grit, curiosity, collaboration, self-control and creativity.
School promotion takes many forms.
At St Alipius we promote the excellence, equity and empowerment of our students and our community through engaging in various ventures across the Ballarat diocese.
Recently, three of our students participated in filming video footage that will be used to accompany diocesan media and publications. This footage has been created to communicate the new direction in governance across the Ballarat Diocese - DOBCEL.
Included is one example of how our students will represent St Alipius Parish School - through promoting Catholic Education Ballarat to prospective employees of Catholic Education in the diocese.
Thank you to Pepper, Sienna and Tilly for your enthusiasm, dedication, and in particular, your agility when managing a very tight schedule.
Thanks to Jenny and Ivy who have instigated a lunchtime tennis competition. We are grateful for the handy work of Ronnie, our grounds and maintenance person, for painting tennis court lines for us on the asphalt.
Thanks also to Maria for helping to facilitate this sporting venture at recess and lunch.
It is clear to see that Autumn has arrived.
The contrast of colours out on the yard is becoming increasingly obvious - leaves are beginning to change colour, the new grass is growing and the bright blue sky is beaming around us.
In response to student feedback, grassed areas have been established around the yard. So far, grass have been introduced alongside the sandpit area on the asphalt side of the school, around the rocks and stage on the turf side of the school, outside the front office, and within the junior playground between the Early Learning Centre and McInerney Centre.
We couldn't be happier with our new and improved green spaces at St Alipius.
TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

MESSAGES FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE
Medical Management Plans:
Could parents/guardians with children who have a medical history requiring the need for a management plan ie/ Anaphylaxis, Allergy and Asthma or any other medical plan please ensure that the school has a current and up-to-date copy. It is essential that these documents are updated and provided to the school at least on an annual basis, to provide us with all the necessary and age appropriate information relevant to the wellbeing of YOUR child.
Late Arrivals/Departures and Returns During the School Day:
Parents and caregivers please be aware that it is a REQUIREMENT that if your child is late to school or needs to leave the premises for any other commitments throughout the day that this is registered through the School Office on departure and return. It is required that the school is made aware, and we have everybody registered onto the premises on any given day. Could all parents/guardians please enforce this either by attending the school office or having their child present to the office desk and speak with reception. We realise that at times the office can be busy and staff may be attending to other concerns, please do not send children straight through to the classrooms.
