Curriculum intent for English
Our approach to teaching English is rooted in the belief that every pupil can succeed. Our carefully sequenced and planned curriculum aims to provide children with opportunities to develop secure foundational skills and a depth to their understanding. They build on their experiences in order to achieve their goals and have lasting impact. We aim to instil a love of reading, writing and communication. We want children to become frequent readers who read for pleasure and confident writers who can write for a variety of purposes. We nurture a culture where children take pride in their writing and inspire children to be confident in the art of speaking and listening. We understand the key role of English in all aspects of school life and the years beyond education.
Communication and Language
Providing a language-rich environment is crucial. By commenting on what children are interested in or doing and echoing back what they say with new vocabulary added, practitioners will build children’s language effectively. Reading frequently to children and engaging them actively in stories, non-fiction, rhymes and poems and then providing them with extensive opportunities to use and embed new words in a range of contexts, will give children the opportunity to thrive. Through conversation, story-telling and role play, children become comfortable using a rich range of vocabulary and language structures.
Literacy
Reading consists of two dimensions: language comprehension and word reading. Language comprehension starts from birth and develops through talk, rhymes, poems and songs. Skilled word reading, taught later, involves both the speedy working out of the pronunciation of unfamiliar printed words (decoding) and speedy recognition of familiar printed words. Writing involves transcription (spelling and handwriting) and composition (articulating ideas and structuring them in speech, before writing).
Here are some videos to help parents understand some of the grammar and punctuation terminology that our pupils learn.
Our current approach to English was adopted in September 2024. We have implemented daily elements of English teaching alongside the use of Grammarsaurus writing units. Each year begins with a focus on transcription (continued throughout the year as a daily element of teaching) and the Grammarsaurus ‘Place Value of Punctuation and Grammar’ (PVPG) unit. In KS2, this is completed on a 2-year cycle. The PVPG unit is followed by PVPG application units and then other Grammarsaurus writing units which are designed to create a ‘bespoke learning journey for children’. The writing journey is kept fluid to address the needs of the class with assessment for learning used to gauge the next steps of the journey. A model text linked to each unit ensures that pupils have a model of excellence to work towards. Suggested texts are read alongside the writing units.
KS2 Reading lessons follow a 2-week structure which uses an ‘I do, we do, you do’ approach with multiple opportunities to read a text aloud. A fluency checklist and text marking are also used to develop fluency and prosody.
