Water Bottle Handle

If you have a water bottle that desperately needs a handle, look no further. I will show you how to create a water bottle handle that you can use on many different types of water bottles. This can be used if you want a handle on your water bottle, but you don’t have the time or means to make a full water bottle cover, or you just want the design of your water bottle to be seen. Whatever your reason, a handle like this is the perfect solution.

You will need:

  • 4-6 meters of worsted weight yarn (my original project used 5.5 meters)

  • a 3.50 mm hook (we are using a small hook to get a very dense fabric)

  • a needle to weave in ends (this is optional, I often use my crochet hook)

  • the water bottle you desire to create a handle for so that you can size the handle properly

Gauge: 5 sts and 5 rows in 1 inch, single crochet. The gauge is not super important as you can size this project to any type of water bottle. Just make sure that your hook is not too big so that it creates a slightly less stretchy fabric, which is better.

To begin:

Ch 22. At this point, you can size the chain to the neck of your bottle below the lid. In order for the handle to stay on, you must make the chain smaller than the lid. The chain should be stretched pretty tightly around the neck of the bottle below the lid. This step is very important. It must be very tight so it will not slip off as the handle is used and stretches. Even to leave a small space before you slip stitch instead of chaining one more would be good. (NOTE: This will work best for water bottles where the lid is larger than the neck of the bottle. If you have a bottle where the lid is the same size as the neck of the bottle, you might want to leave the 1st and 2nd rows and simply use your chain to put in the narrow part the lid screws onto.) Join the chain with a slip stitch. Be careful not to twist it.

Rows 1 & 2: Ch 1, sc in every st around, join with a slip stitch in ch 1. Now would be a good time to test if it fits. It should be able to slip on snugly with the lid off.

Row 3: Ch 40. You can chain more or fewer stitches here for a longer or shorter handle.

Sc 2 in the other side. You can count stitches or just fold it in half.

Row 4: Turn and work up the edge and around the chain you just made.

When you get to the other side, sc 1, then work one slip stitch.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

This water bottle holder is quite sturdy when worked correctly. It should not be able to slip off when the lid is on but should come off when you remove the lid.

If you end up with the handle slipping off after a while of use, try shrinking the item if the yarn can shrink and has not been prewashed and shrunk. Otherwise, you may have to retry the project and chain less at the beginning.

Happy Crocheting!
