GEJ4020 Consolidating Undergraduate Learning through University ePortfolio
Hello everyone! I'm Kenny! :)
Welcome to view my e-portfolio and start my Self-Exploration Through Art Journey!
Hello! My name is Wong Kwok Tung Kenny. I am currently a fourth-year student studying Creative Arts and Culture (Visual Arts) at the Education University of Hong Kong. Before attending EdUHK, I studied (BA) in Landscape Architecture at the Technological and Higher Education Institute of Hong Kong (VTC), where I completed my first two years of study.
As a child, I was passionate about art and painting, exploring various media and techniques to create my works. I also have graphic design, interior design, environmental design, and expressive arts skills. I believe that art is an essential part of life. Before taking the DSE, I really wanted to study Visual Arts as my major at university. I believe that daily, we engage with visual arts and communicate through them meaningfully.
Through various activities and experiences, I have gained a wealth of knowledge that has shaped my perspective on art and education. Engaging with different artistic mediums, participating in workshops, and collaborating with fellow artists have all contributed to my understanding of the creative process. These experiences ignited a passion to share this knowledge with others.
In my future career, I aspire to become an art educator or work in the field of art administration. As an art educator, I hope to inspire students to explore their creativity and develop their artistic skills while fostering an appreciation for the arts. Alternatively, through a role in art administration, I would like to support artists and cultural organizations, helping to create opportunities for broader community engagement with the arts. Ultimately, my goal is to contribute to the growth and appreciation of art in society, ensuring that its transformative power is accessible to all.

Episode 1: Be an actor & Dare to take the first step.
"First Taking the 'Theater and Stage Art' Course in EdUHK"
Oh, Kenny! You couldn't imagine you were the drama show's main actor!
In one of Shakespeare's plays, the point is that "Life imitates art; Art imitates life." During year 3, I took the compulsory course "(CAC 1005) Theater and Stage Art", where I was introduced to theatrical performance for the first time. This experience remains vivid in my memory as a new and enriching journey.
This compulsory course taught us much about basic stage drama art, such as lighting, scenes, sound, etc. In addition, in class, the teacher constantly takes us to explore the history of drama and study various forms of drama to have a deeper understanding of the powerful charm of stage art. However, I never expected that the final assessment would involve performing a drama for the teacher and classmates.
"I want to be a director, I want to be a costume designer, I want to be a makeup artist..." They all expressed the positions they wanted, but these were all behind-the-scenes jobs, and no one wanted to be an actor. My classmates kept recommending that I do it. Only a few boys were in the group, so I had no choice but to agree to their request.
...
"But...is it as simple as the male protagonist just going on stage and reading his lines?"
The play's hero is a dashing and foul-mouthed playboy whose character traits are completely opposite to my real-life personality. I felt very nervous during the rehearsal, especially since I had no acting experience. When I read my lines, the director criticized me for not projecting enough strength and for lacking momentum; my movements didn’t fit the image of the male protagonist.
As I struggled with my lines, I felt increasingly guilty and began to doubt my suitability for acting. I want to cry at that moment. The thought of giving up kept recurring in my mind.
"Should I give up...? Who can help me to make a decision?"
Some of my teammates noticed that I seemed listless and offered me much support and encouragement. After the rehearsal, I tried communicating with other actors and directors, hoping to spend more time with them to review lines and get feedback on my acting skills.
At that moment, I realized that success often comes from persevering after failure, practising more, and making improvements with each rehearsal. Kenny! Keep pushing forward!
"Encountering difficulties is not what matters;
it’s how you face and overcome them that does."
The most impressive moment of the entire course was standing on the stage at the opening. My classmates and I kept cheering each other up and striving for success without failure. When the curtain opened and the stage lights shone on me, I suddenly felt a massive energy and excitement. I must perform this performance well on stage.
Standing on this stage, I felt a sense of liberation and empowerment, as if I had transcended the boundaries of my identity and was fully immersed in the character, living in a world of infinite possibilities. After the performance, my classmates and teachers all applauded. I tried my best to perform so that they could better understand the whole drama.
GILOs Achievements through the Episode 1
Reflecting on my past experiences, I have been profoundly affected by the impact of theatre and performance on my personal growth and development, in line with Kolb's Learning Cycle (1984). This course provides opportunities for self-expression, helps students build determination, and allows us to explore our interests in the arts, especially after facing repeated failures and the challenges of rehearsals, performances, and post-performance reflections. We must be willing to put in extra effort and communicate more effectively with our classmates and teachers to succeed.
Overall, this course has been transformative for me, shaping my artistic sensibilities, enhancing my creative thinking skills, and influencing my personal perspective. It has also broadened my interest in various art forms, allowing me to explore new creative avenues and appreciate the richness of diverse artistic expressions.
Episode 2: Experience Art & Cultural Exchange.
"An Art and Cultural Exchange at Beijing Tsinghua University"
Group photo taking in the Beijing Palace Museum
There was an academic and cultural exchange between EdUHK and Tsinghua University from June 1 to June 8, 2024. Faculty selected some CAC (VA) and FHM program students to participate in this event.
I feel honoured and grateful to represent the faculty as a VA student attending this exchange.
We visited many museums and exhibitions in Beijing, such as the Beijing Palace Museum, Inside-Out Art Museum and UCCA Center for Contemporary Art in the 798 Art District.
We also had the opportunity to visit the Academy of Fine Arts at Tsinghua University. We interacted with local and international students there, which greatly helped us learn and broaden our global perspective. In the evening, we attended an elective course on fine arts and artistic thinking, which provided us with a lot of fun and valuable knowledge.

"Actually...we can learn about the world in Hong Kong, so why go out and see the world?"
Having been educated in Hong Kong, I have always believed that its education system is among the best in the world and has a strong international reputation. Every year, students from all over the globe come to Hong Kong for learning and exchange programs.
Furthermore, teachers from various countries and regions bring diverse cultural backgrounds, contributing to what can be seen as a form of ‘global education’ in Hong Kong. This raises a question: why do we need to travel to other places to study? With this curiosity in mind, I boarded a flight to Beijing to explore how its culture, education, and living habits differ from those in Hong Kong.
"The moment I stepped into Beijing, my horizons seemed too narrow..."
The study tour to Tsinghua University in Beijing changed my perception of Mainland universities and allowed me to experience diverse cultures and educational backgrounds. I had always believed that Mainland universities focused solely on pressuring students to study. However, while they emphasize a solid academic foundation, students also engage in numerous international competitions. I was surprised that some students have even pursued artistic projects in Korea. This experience showed me that various universities are offering students global education opportunities and broadening their horizons.
Through exchanges between students from both sides of the border, we overcame language barriers and formed friendships with individuals from different backgrounds.
"It's a wide world, and I'd like to go explore it!"
One of the most profound aspects of my academic interactions has been the opportunity to engage with peers and professors worldwide. In the class and after-school discussions, I witnessed firsthand the power of diverse perspectives in fostering creativity and innovation.
During my week in Beijing, I encountered significant academic and personal challenges. The teaching and living styles at universities in Beijing differ greatly from those in Hong Kong, creating a very intense classroom atmosphere. These different teaching methods pushed me out of my comfort zone and required me to adapt and learn in new ways. I consistently sought guidance from local students and professors to help me adjust quickly. Facing these challenges improved my problem-solving skills and deepened my understanding of cross-cultural communication and collaboration, ultimately broadening my horizons.

Creative Procuction --- Postcards Journey Design
We captured the essence of our eight days in Beijing through postcards. I was responsible for the design and graphics, while Hazel Fong Yin, a student from the Chinese Education program, handled the text design.
Creating these postcards allowed us to develop our creativity and understand design aesthetics. We found the final postcards to be both memorable and meaningful. Reflecting on the challenges I faced and the lessons I learned during the trip, I feel grateful for the opportunity to grow intellectually and emotionally through these experiences.
GILOs Achievements through the Episode 1
Through my exchange trip to Beijing, I challenged many of my narrow views, and I am grateful to the school for allowing me to see the world. After graduation, I may choose to become a visual arts teacher. Through the study tour experience, I believe that globalisation in education will become increasingly popular and will integrate artificial intelligence technology to stay relevant.
By striving for more opportunities to explore the world and gaining sufficient exposure, I can offer my future students deeper insights, which has also boosted my confidence in my journey to becoming a teacher.
During my exchanges with professors and students from local universities, I witnessed the power of diverse perspectives in fostering creativity and innovation. These interactions broadened my intellectual horizons and highlighted the importance of inclusivity and mutual respect within a globalised academic community.
Episode 3: Art Practice & Career Exploration.
"Summer Internship in Hong Kong Arts Festival Ltd."
Screen capture from official website of the Hong Kong Arts Festival
The Hong Kong Arts Festival was officially launched in 1973. It has a long history in this metropolis and is an essential cultural event in the international art scene. It presents performances by many outstanding local and international artists in February and March every year, as well as a variety of "Additional materials and flavours" and educational activities provided to students in primary, secondary, and tertiary institutions, striving to enrich local cultural life. It is also a non-profit organisation that receives government grants and sponsorships.
As for the outreach department where I work, "Youth Friends" is a program designed by the Hong Kong Arts Festival to cultivate young people's interest in art and expand the audience. It mainly targets students from secondary schools and tertiary institutions.
Members have the opportunity to enjoy two arts festival programs or rehearsals every year and can participate in a variety of workshops, lectures, backstage visits and other activities to improve their appreciation of art.
During my internship, I gathered important ideas from outstanding people inside the company to develop a strong sense of professional ethics and knowledge. I aggressively took guidance from my mentors and superiors, taking each opportunity with an open mind to ensure that my career goals aligned with the current market trends. Besides, I attempted to use my educational background in cultural and creative arts, computer software design, and art administrative management to demonstrate innovation and add actual value to the organisation.
Through this immersive journey, I aim to improve my talents and contribute significantly to the organisation's goals, fostering personal and professional development.

"To be honest, what is art administration...?"
Oops...art administration?
The Hong Kong Arts Festival Outreach Department provides various art activities for primary, secondary, and tertiary students. As interns, we assisted with administrative tasks before the performances. While these duties may seem basic and somewhat tedious, they offered valuable learning experiences.
I improved my organizational skills by compiling information about primary and secondary schools and tertiary institutions in Hong Kong. This involved gathering contact details and using Excel to organize the data accurately and accessibly.
Additionally, I developed my communication and teamwork skills. Collaborating with team members required constant communication to discuss data processing, social media platform post design and task management, allowing me to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds. This experience significantly enhanced my skills in these areas.
"How to deal with mistakes made at work?"
In my daily work, I have discovered my strengths. Sometimes, tasks are assigned by mentors and leaders, and I realize that I need to be more thoroughly checked to avoid errors or omissions in the data. My problem-solving thinking isn't always clear enough, which makes my work more passive. I also recognize a lack of active innovation and need to strengthen my coordination skills. My work experience is limited, and I often feel impatient when facing challenges. I want to achieve results quickly, but I lack overall planning, which leads to carelessness in my work.
However, every time I encounter a problem, I take the time to reflect and communicate with my leaders. They patiently helped me identify the issues and guided me on improving. This feedback has gradually allowed me to correct my mistakes. What I fear most is not the difficulties we face but how we approach and overcome them. These experiences help me grow, and I suddenly feel like I have matured. I am gaining a better understanding of how to be responsible and carry out my tasks effectively, which has deepened my appreciation for the meaning of learning and life.
"Activity experience, is also part of the job"
You couldn't imagine that I could play during my working period!!
The LARP (Live Action Role-Playing) game is an excellent test of players’ creative thinking and problem-solving skills. With six characters, each possessing unique traits, the game challenges players' logical thinking. Initially, I struggled to understand the script and was confused by my teammates' input. However, I learned to analyze the plot, character details, and storyline progression. I discovered that players often provided inaccurate information, leading to contradictions in the narrative. This experience has enhanced my analytical skills and logical thinking, preparing me to tackle workplace challenges more effectively.
Additionally, role-playing and storytelling skills play a vital role in the game. Players must engage with their characters and contribute to the storyline. This activity has improved my emotional expression and strengthened my interactions with others, which is essential in daily life and future careers.
Furthermore, the game provides insights into performance and drama culture. Participants can interview theatre staff and directors to understand the connections between the script and the performing arts. Learning from professionals has deepened my appreciation for creativity and performance, guiding me in exploring potential career paths in the arts.

GILOs Achievements through the Episode 1
During the past two months, I focused on developing essential work skills and successfully met my internship goals. This experience taught me to overcome challenges, enhance my problem-solving skills and manage my impatience.
Internships are crucial for undergraduate students, as they provide practical exposure to the industry and insights that classroom learning cannot offer. This experience helps broaden our understanding and prepares us for future careers.
My short summer internship inspired me greatly. As newcomers to the workforce, we often lack experience, but every task and challenge I faced contributed to my growth. These experiences will be invaluable in my future endeavours and have clarified my career direction.
Conclusion for the Journey
Reflecting on past experiences, I was struck by the profound impact that theatre and performance had on my personal growth and development, according to Kolb’s Learning Cycle (1984).
I believe that global education will soon become more popular and adapt to modern times, especially through artificial intelligence in the visual arts industry.
"After graduation, I plan to pursue a career as an arts administrator within an arts organization or possibly as a visual arts teacher in the education sector. I am passionate about fostering creativity and supporting artists, and I believe these roles will allow me to make a meaningful impact in the arts community.
Reflecting on the challenges I've faced and the valuable lessons I've learned throughout this journey, I am deeply grateful for the opportunities that have contributed to my personal and professional growth. These experiences have enhanced my intellectual capabilities and shaped me emotionally, preparing me for the exciting journey ahead. I look forward to applying these insights in my future career, inspiring others, and continuing to learn."
