Berry Bi -English Learning APP

Learning APP

During the imitation exercise, I found a great website, English Central. We can read following the video and record ourselves. This website is very intelligent and can tell us where we have made mistakes in our recordings. And it will display the phonetic symbols, word meanings, and demonstrate the pronunciation of mispronounced words. We can read the word against the standard pronunciation until we master the correct pronunciation of the word. I think this website is very helpful in improving the pronunciation of words.

And there is also a Chinese software 'Qupeiyin' which I think is very useful. It's a dubbing software with many English movies and documentaries. In this APP we can dub the different videos, and then the system will give us a score. At the same time, many strangers will give us ratings. After using this software, I think my intonation and rhythm have been improved a lot.

I think dubbing the video is very helpful for my accent improvement. My friends say my pronunciation sounds more natural.

Learning experience

During learning, I encounter three major difficulties. First, It is difficult to distinguish between the pronunciation of long vowels and short vowels in words. For example, I always mixed up /u:/ and /ʊ/. When I pronounce "poor," it sounds like "pull." And I also have some problems with consonant sounds, such as "v" and "w". For example, "Very"/verɪ/ is often said as /werɪ/. To solve these problems, I have watched many instructional videos on Youtube to imitate their mouth shapes and sounds. And then I have used the software to compare my pronunciation with the correct pronunciation of the words to practice. Through practice, I am able to distinguish these sounds correctly when reading words individually, but I find that I am still mixed in communication with people. Therefore, I review this section every week to strengthen my memory. And I go to the asllc'English consultation to talk to the teachers and let them correct my pronunciation of some words in the article. I will pay more attention to these issues in my future presentations as well.

Secondly, I find some of the linking sounds in the sentence are very tongue-twisting. Like "wait until it is time". I can't always read sentences with linking sounds smoothly in my speech. During my independent study, I watch a lot of videos to imitate how they read some sentences. Then I record my voice and compare it with the videos. With practice, I have gradually mastered linking sounds.

Thirdly, I had a big problem with stress and rhythm in English. Because of personal habit, I always pronounce function words with stress, like prepositions and conjunctions. To solve this problem, I have found a good way to which is to choose fourteen seconds of the Ted Talk speech, and then I memorize the sentences, and read them with imitating the speaker's tone of voice, and record them for comparison with the video. My rhythm has gradually been improved. However, the sentence stress still bothers me. In the future, I will continue my training method and practice a few hours a week. I hope this problem will be solved in the future.

How these apps enhance your English learning.

After talking about my learning experience, I also want to show how to use these apps to learn English.
