Post-secondary timelines may vary (some colleges or techs, for example, may have three yearly start dates for certain programs), but this checklist provides students with a standard timeline for university applications and scholarship preparation.
We have a ton of scholarships listed by month, information on alternate post-secondary funding such as loans, gap year ideas, reference information and more in this document, so check it out! Grade 11s, it is not too early for you to take a look at this as well so that you are prepared for your grade 12 year.
MyPass is an Alberta Education portal that will allow you to view your Detailed Academic Report (DAR), track your credit count, monitor your grad progress, and order official transcripts when applying to post-secondary institutions. You can find step-by-step instructions for how to create your own myPass account here.
If you require assistance to set up your myPass account, you may e-mail crinehart@rockyview.ab.ca. In the body of your e-mail, please include your personal e-mail account address along with your request for her to help you set up your myPass account.
Do you want to apply to a post-secondary institution within Alberta? You can typically apply for early acceptance starting at the beginning of October. Many universities close applications for the fall term at the beginning of March, but you can check the specific dates for each institution on their websites.
Here are the steps to apply:
Create an ApplyAlberta account. Note that your Alberta Student Number (ASN) is available on your DAR through myPass if you don't already know it. It is not the same as your PowerSchool ID.
Fill in your application. We've asked them to change the name of our school, but if you cannot find "Summit Trails" on there, it may still be under "Rocky View Schools Online High School." The University of Calgary has created a very useful document to walk you through the ApplyAlberta process here.
Submit your application and pay the fee (a credit card is useful for this step).
Submit transcripts (available through your myPass account) and any other necessary documents.
Your myBlueprint account contains several personal inventories that will generate a multitude of career possibilities once you have completed them. It will also show you where you can take those programs, how much they cost, and many other useful details, so please check that out as all RVS students have been given myBlueprint accounts.
Q: Why should I attend an open house?
A: In addition to being able to get a feel for the environment and programming offered, many of the open houses offer free applications at their events (you can check with each institution beforehand). When you consider that it is $125 to apply to some institutions, that can add up quickly!

Out-of-Province Post-Secondary Fair
This organization only runs these fairs every two years, so the next one will be held in 2026. Students in grades 11 and 12 should consider attending. There will be representation from approximately 40 out-of-province institutions, so this event would be well worth your time if you wish to attend a post-secondary institution outside of Alberta.
