"To fall in love with God is the greatest romance; to seek Him the greatest adventure;

to find Him, the greatest human achievement." - Saint Augustine

These words by St. Augustine find a living reflection in the life of S. Maria Elnora Rilloraza, a dedicated member of the Religious of the Virgin Mary (RVM). Revered for her commitment to education, pastoral ministry, and profound spiritual service, S. Maria Elnora entered eternal rest on March 10, 2026.

S. Maria Elnora leaves behind a century-long legacy, including meaningful years of devoted service as a religious sister. She was a woman of contented simplicity, unwavering faith, and joyful obedience. She would have celebrated her 101st birthday this July and her 70th anniversary as an RVM in August this year. Her passing concludes a truly remarkable journey of love serving in God’s vineyard - a journey that has now reached its ultimate fulfillment in His presence.

Early Life and Family of Faith

Born Elnora Rilloraza on July 10, 1925, during a significant storm in San Fernando, La Union, she was the eighth of eleven children to Miguel Rilloraza, a Clerk of Court of the First Instance, and Macaria Galvez, a grade school teacher. Elnora was reared in a harmonious and faithful Catholic home, where, despite her father’s active affiliation with masonry, her parents were united in prayer. Ensuring their children received a Catholic education was paramount, Elnora was baptized and confirmed at St. William Church in San Fernando.

Academic Excellence and Spiritual Depth

S. Maria Elnora's life was a reflection of both academic and religious excellence. She attended Christ the King Academy under the Belgian Sisters, La Union High School, and graduated in April 1950 (a Holy Year) from the University of Santo Tomas (UST) with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. While in college, she deepened her devotion to the Blessed Sacrament and the Rosary, and her spiritual roots began to flourish.

Vocation: The Call to Obedience and Sacrifice

The call to religious life was clear, though delayed by a deep sense of family responsibility and the hardships of the Japanese occupation. These tyrannical years did not deter her vocation; instead, they served to deepen it as she dedicated herself to daily prayer -including the Trisagio imploring divine protection for her family.

After years of quiet discernment and spiritual counsel, she formally announced her profound decision on the Feast of the Holy Family, January 12, 1954. Her courageous declaration was initially met by her strict but loving father with a moment of crushing finality. He offered only a sorrowful, purely formal blessing - one made all the more devastating by his words: "You are counted dead to me."

Resolute Spirit and Spiritual Wisdom

As a testament to her spiritual maturity, S. Maria Elnora did not succumb to despair. Instead, she responded with inspiring faith, gently challenging her father’s perspective: “God gave you eleven children, and now He is asking for only one. Are you not willing to give Him even that? Among your children, I believe I will  be the one who remembers you most, especially in my prayers, for my married siblings will naturally be preoccupied with their own families.”

Her mother, a devout Catholic who shared in this profound spiritual understanding, could only offer her blessing with deep maternal concern: “Take care of yourself.” Yet, in a beautiful witness to their bond, her father appeared at the train station just minutes before her departure for the convent. There, he granted her his true fatherly blessing - a gesture of reconciliation for which she remained deeply grateful throughout her life. S. Maria Elnora entered religious life with a clear, dual purpose: to serve the Lord, laboring for the salvation of souls, and to offer her life in prayer for the eventual conversion of her beloved father.

Religious Formation and Missionary Zeal

S. Maria Elnora  entered the RVM Congregation as an aspirant on January 14, 1954. She received the habit on August 14, 1954, and made her first religious profession on August 15, 1956. She committed her life perpetually to the Lord on May 24, 1962, on the Feast of Mary, Help of Christians.

Throughout her religious life, S. Maria Elnora was guided by an unwavering spirit of obedience, accepting diverse and often challenging assignments with courage and wonder.

Sacramento: The Immigrant Vocation

S. Maria Elnora’s deepest professional and pastoral impact was felt in Sacramento, California, where she arrived on August 20, 1964. For many years, she served as secretary to Msgr. Raymond Renwald, Rector of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament. While her primary duties involved managing church records, she found her true pastoral calling in conducting census and organizing marriage validations and spiritual outreach for the Filipino immigrant community. In addition, she earned an Elementary Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) certificate and taught at Holy Angels School.

In Sacramento, she demonstrated a remarkable adaptability by joining the federal VISTA (Volunteer in Service to America) program for 3 ½ years, viewing her humble services to the aged and families as a direct extension of God’s glory. A revitalizing spiritual milestone occurred in July 1979, when S. Maria Elnora participated in a planned spiritual renewal program, which she termed a necessary "refueling" for her mission.
