Clarify expectations with your child for online learning. (students should complete all school work each day and be available to meet with teachers during school hours, if a meeting is scheduled).
Setup a specific place where your student(s) can work during the day. This area should have a table/desk, chair, and ample lighting. Sometimes a kitchen table makes a good place to work if a desk/office area is not available. Headphones can help reduce surrounding noise if a quiet place is not available.
Encourage students to set a schedule for completing school work. This schedule should include set times for “screen breaks” and lunch each day.
Students should be encouraged to spend at least one hour each day completing some kind of physical activity. This can be as simple as having six, ten-minute breaks scheduled during the day for stretching and taking a walk around the house.
Discuss appropriate use of the camera in a meet. If your student is working in an area with other people, It is best to make sure the camera is pointing toward a wall to prevent others from inadvertently walking into camera view.
Discuss appropriate use of the microphone in a meet. We recommend students remain muted during a meet unless they are asked to respond or they have input to give. Being unmuted can cause a lot of background noise to be heard by others on the call.
Have your student(s) review the digital citizenship information on this page and have them complete the "INTERLAND" activity to learn more about online safety.
