Microscopy 2024
Focus Questions: How do we learn about things too small to see?
Lesson 1: MICROSCOPES AND THEIR PARTS
Learning Goals
1. Know the parts of the microscope.
2. Understand how to focus and use the microscope.
3. Understand magnification of each lens and eyepiece.
WARM UP (in class): Label the Parts of the Microscope

Lesson 2: CREATING A WET MOUNT
Wed/Thurs, December 9th and 10th
Learning Goals
1. I can create a wet mount for my own specimen.
2. I can dye my specimen for better viewing.
3. I can clean and care for the lab materials.
Lesson Summary
WARM-UP- Kahoot.
MICROSCOPES- Students created wet mounts and viewed the letter "e". We then stained the "e" using the method below. After staining the "e" and viewing, we moved on to preparing a slide with an onion skin. Some students had time to also stain this slide and view under the microscope.
Materials Used
PRESENTATION: We used parts of the linked presentation.

Lesson 3: Who Discovered Cells?
12/18 to 12/19: INTRODUCTION- What is a Cell?

ASSIGNMENT #1- GoFormative over the reading on the right. See Google Classroom for assignment link.
ASSIGNMENT #2- Cell Discovery Chart
Instructions- Using the document for ASSIGNMENT #1 and the additional videos linked below, fill out the chart on the scientists that were responsible for discovering cells and for developing the CELL THEORY.

Lesson 4: TYPES OF MICROSCOPES
Learning Goals
1. I can identify the four major types of microscopes.
Optical Microscope
Compound Light Microscope
Stereoscope
Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM)
Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM)
2. I understand what each help us to "see" in different ways.
Foldable Assignment
Cut ONLY along the dotted lines and glue the left side flap into your science journal on PAGE 43 of your science journal.
OUTSIDE FLAP: Write the names of the microscopes on each flap. (A different microscope on each flap).
Optical Microscope
Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
Transmission Microscope (TEM)
Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM)
3. OUTSIDE FLAP: Draw a sketch of the microscope or something that could be seen by that microscope (or both).
4. INSIDE FLAP: Use the information from the presentation to write the following on each microscope:
THE MAGNIFICATION
GENERATED IMAGE
KEY FEATURE
HOW IT WORKS
MICROSCOPY VIDEO
Lesson 5: MINI MICROSCOPE RESEARCH
Learning Goals
1. I can identify the FOUR major types of microscopes AND what their uses.
Compound Light Microscope
Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM)
Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM)
Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM)
2. I understand what each help us to "see" in different ways.
Class Outline
Review types of microscopes as a class with presentation.
Do online activity, "Meet the Microscopes" in class. Post results to Google Classroom.
Use microscopes to practice and learn about preparing slides and focusing.
Homework- STUDY FOR QUIZ
Use the Quizizz and Quizlet links above to study.
