New Platform Alert 🚨! SchooLinks

SchooLinks is replacing Scoir and YouCanBookMe as our college and career platform and appointment booking system. We are excited for our students and families to familiarize themselves with all of SchooLinks features! Please reference the flyers below to learn how to log in and book an appointment with your counselor.

New Student Orientation

We had a blast welcoming our 9th graders for our New Student Orientation on August 31st. For the first time in Marshwood history, orientation was a full-day event and we had 100% ATTENDANCE!

Students had a jam-packed day full of informative presentations, time with their advisors and classroom teachers, delicious food throughout the day (pancake breakfast, donut snack, cookout lunch, and a snowcone dessert), and more!

THANK YOU to our incredible cafeteria staff, custodians, administrators, teachers, student ambassadors, and our amazing 9th grade counselor, Mrs. Edson, for making this all possible!

An additional thank you to our local businesses, Congdon's Donuts and Aroma Joe's, for your generous donations, and to Jermaine Moore from Mars Hill Group for your engaging kickoff presentation!

Suicide Awareness Month

Did you know that September is Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month?

Tuesday, September 8th is 988 Awareness Day. As a reminder, 988 is the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, a nationwide hotline that anyone can call or text to be connected to trained crisis counselors who provide free, confidential support 24/7. The goal of 988 Awareness Day is to increase understanding of this resource and spread positive awareness about how it can save lives.

To help share this message with our students, we have partnered with NAMI Maine and have a few handouts and resources at a resource table at all three lunches on 9/8. 

College & Career Mini-Fairs!

The School Counseling Department is excited to announce that we will be holding multiple college and military "mini-fairs" this fall! Mini-fairs will be held in the Career Center during advisory. These events are a great opportunity for you to finalize your college list, make connections with admissions officers, or start the process of joining the military or workforce. NEACAC College Fair - October 7th

The school counselors are excited to spring a group of students to the NEACAC College Fair at University of New England on Wednesday, October 7th. Permission slips will be available shortly in the School Counseling Hub (D207), so stay tuned for an email as to when they become available! Spots are limited to 40 students for this event and are first-come, first-serve!

Dual Enrollment Information

Dual enrollment classes for the fall semester have officially begun! Please reference the document below with important information for any student taking a dual enrollment class - reach out to your school counselor if you have any questions.

Save the Date - Financial Aid Night 10/14

On Wednesday, October 14th, from 5:00-6:00pm in the MHS Library, we will be hosting  Jessica Whittier, a college access counselor from The Finance Authority of Maine (FAME) to present on an overview of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which will open on October 1st.

Seniors

MHS Senior Plan

We encourage seniors and their families to "bookmark" the Senior Plan document below, which gives you month-by-month to-do lists and reminders to keep you organized during the future planning process. This document has plans for students who are pursuing college, the military, and the workforce!

Senior Kickoff Presentations & Senior Meetings

School counselors will present to senior advisories during the week of September 14th, during which they will receive a refresher about postsecondary options and next steps to take in the college application process. Seniors are encouraged to schedule their senior meeting with their school counselor AFTER their senior presentation at least one month before their earliest deadline!

Financial Aid Information

The 2026-2027 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) will be released on October 1, 2026! Below is the latest information from FAME (Financial Authority of Maine):

• Attend a Financial Aid Information Session - FAME offers both in-person and virtual sessions to help students and families understand and navigate the financial aid process. During these sessions, we’ll discuss the steps to get ready to apply for financial aid, provide an overview of the FAFSA, and explain what to expect after the FAFSA is submitted. We hope you’ll join us! Students and families report feeling much more confident and prepared after attending one of these sessions. Visit the Events page on our website for a list of upcoming sessions.

• Connect with FAME for a Chance to Win a $1,000 Scholarship! - To stay updated on the FAFSA and the financial aid process, please join our text and/or email list. We’ll send important reminders and tips to help you navigate the critical steps in the financial aid process. As an added incentive, students in the class of 2026 and their parents/caregivers who join our list will be entered into a drawing for one of three $1,000 Future Fund scholarships. Save the Date! PSAT Day - Wednesday, October 21st

Any interested junior or sophomore will have the opportunity to take the PSAT during the school day at MHS on Wednesday, October 21st. Students will receive an email on Friday, September 11th to fill out a survey if they would like to take the PSAT. If a student does not fill out the survey by Friday, September 18th, they will not be able to test. Study plans and test prep information can be found at this link!

Program Description

Online SAT Prep Matters and SAT Boot Camp are courses designed by Dr Mary Smyth, a long-time SAT coach in the Midcoast. College-bound high school juniors who plan to take the SAT test will benefit from learning about the new format and updated content of the new SAT.

Modality
This dynamic program will be offered synchronously via Zoom—you’ll need access to a stable internet connection. There will be assignments between classes.

Program Benefits
Using lessons that she writes herself, Smyth has helped many students through their own hard work improve their SAT scores by 100-200 points.

Who Should Enroll
College-bound high school juniors who plan to take the SAT test.

Community Service

Don't forget, 50 hours of community service is part of your graduation requirements! Your 50 hours need to be completed by May 1st of your senior year. Setting a goal of completing 10 to 15 hours each year of high school will help to set you up for achieving this requirement in no time! Community Service forms are located in the D-Pod Hub. You can find community service opportunities on the "Opportunity Board" webpage in SchooLinks under the "Engage" button on your login screen.

This month's community service highlight is through the Eliot Historical Society! Below is a message from them:

The Eliot Historical Society welcomes new members and/or persons who can only give a few hours a month to help on a project of their interest.

• Collection and cataloging of antiquities

• Upkeep of building projects

• Help us to organize the annual picnic/Eliot Festival/ other events

• Helping care for private cemeteries

Community Resources

Treatment Connection:  A Free Online Substance Use & Mental Health Directory for Maine

The Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has partnered with a national platform called Treatment Connection™, which helps people find substance use and mental health treatment in their area.

This tool is available to everyone.

Currently, the site lists more than 500 treatment services in Maine. The search tool makes it easy to find and contact local treatment providers.

With just a few clicks, you can search for providers and programs that may help you. Also, everything stays private – no identifiable information is shared.

At Treatment Connection you can:

• Look for treatment near you.

• Find results that match your needs.

• Know that your personal information is kept private.

• Learn about treatment options.

• Take a short substance use quiz to find a provider that’s right for you.

• Reach out privately to treatment agencies through the website.

• Anyone can use it. You do not need to be a MaineCare member to use this tool.
