STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT
On Monday, October 2, 2023, all district administrators completed a self-assessment with regard to parent and community communication. Once each administrator completed the self-assessment, small groups were created to share the results and brainstorm ways to build a more collaborative approach to communications with stakeholders. The most powerful moments came when each building shared their methods to communicate, as that prompted more conversation about how those successful strategies transition across the district.

Career Pathways Program at MHS
The Career Pathways Program at Marshwood High School began recycling cans and plastic bottles for the entire school this month. The Career Pathways Program, a partnership with the nonprofit Work Opportunities Unlimited, focuses on career exploration and job skills for students with disabilities. As part of the recycling initiative, students practice professional communication with faculty and staff, learn to work as a team and delegate different tasks, and build their work ethic while making a positive impact on the school community and the environment. Senior Connor Shephard, a leader in the recycling program, says that "It's important to recycle plastic because if we don't, it ends up in our ocean and hurts marine life." Students collect recycling twice a week and returnables are redeemed through the Clynk program. Profits from the program will be used to fund field trips and cooking projects.
The MMS National Junior Honor Society hosts fun D & D night...
The National Junior Honor Society held a Dodgeball & Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) night on Wednesday Oct. 25th. There were over 65 students who participated. Dodgeball consisted of 12 teams of students and staff who battled it out to claim this year's bragging rights. The championship games will be held on October 31st at our Hawk’s Pride Assembly. The Dungeon and Dragons players adventured into fantasy worlds through role playing led by Dungeon Master's Bryana Rochenski and Superintendent Caverly. The night was a great success filled with food, laughter, and community!
PROJECT ADVENTURE - MGWS
This fall Great Works School was able use the RREV funding from the Department of Education, to work with Project Adventure to install 4 low ropes courses and challenge course elements. Project Adventure has been a long-term partner with Marshwood Middle School, keeping the Challenge course in tip top shape. Now they have built 2 multi-swings in the gym, a tight tope walk, a giant teeter-totter, and the full house challenge element on the GWS playground. These elements will be used throughout the year by classroom and specialist teachers to support our students communication skills, collaboration, and confidence. Though the funding for this project was secured through the REVV outdoor education award, the district supported our project by providing time for teacher training during our district workshop day. On Oct. 6th, all 4th and 5th grade teachers along with Mr. Burnell, Mrs. Craffey, Mrs. Shaw, and Mrs. Allis were trained to facilitate activities and use the elements safely. It was a great morning of teacher team building and learning. While the low ropes course elements are a ton of fun, they are only used with teacher supervision. We hope to have a open house in May to celebrate all of the outdoor learning that the RREV, MEF, and School Board funding has inspired at Great Works School!
