March 31: CÉSAR CHÁVEZ DAY
“Si Se Puede”
“Yes We Can”
In 2014, César Chávez Day was proclaimed a federal commemorative holiday by then-President Barack Obama, who admired the activist.
César Chávez, a Mexican-American farmworker, labor leader, and civil rights activist, has become an important figure in American history and the labor movement for his tireless efforts to improve the lives of farmworkers and his advocacy for social justice and civil rights.
After his parents lost their farm in Arizona during the Great Depression, they moved to California, where they became migrant workers. He lived in a succession of migrant camps and attended school sporadically.
Chávez dedicated his life to fighting for the rights of farm workers and promoting nonviolent social change. He also advocated for better housing and access to education for these workers and their families. His work raised awareness of the struggles faced by farmworkers and migrant families.
Throughout his life, César Chávez recognized education as a potent tool for empowerment and social change. Despite facing significant challenges in his own educational journey, including sporadic attendance due to the demands of migrant labor, Chávez understood the transformative power of knowledge. He believed that education was the key to breaking the cycle of poverty and injustice that plagued farmworker communities.
Chávez's advocacy for education extended beyond mere rhetoric; it was woven into the fabric of his activism. He tirelessly fought for better schooling opportunities for farmworkers' children, advocating for improved access to quality education and equitable resources. Chávez firmly believed that education was not just a privilege but a fundamental right that should be accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic status or background.
In addition to his labor organizing efforts, Chávez actively promoted educational initiatives within the United Farm Workers (UFW) union. He understood that an educated workforce was essential for driving meaningful change and empowering individuals to advocate for their rights effectively.
Chávez's commitment to education is an enduring reminder of the profound impact that learning can have on individuals and communities. His legacy continues to inspire generations to pursue education as a pathway to empowerment and social justice, ensuring that his vision of a better, more equitable world lives on.
YOU are why we do what we do - you have and continue to advocate for more high-quality public school options in your own zip codes and school communities. It is unacceptable that in 2024, families across this country must often still lie about their home address to have any hope of accessing a high-quality public school.
Changing the status quo requires incredible grit, strength, advocacy, and more from our families and communities. Rocketship Texas is no exception as our parent leaders fuel transformational change in our home community of Fort Worth and beyond.

Who will you refer today? 👀
Next week, we begin the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR). You may wonder whether it's necessary to send your children to school during this period. However, there's a compelling case for ensuring your Rocketeer is present during these crucial days of testing.
Opportunity for Growth: The STAAR tests serve as a benchmark to assess your child's academic progress. By participating, your child not only gains valuable insights into their strengths and areas for improvement but also experiences a sense of accomplishment as they conquer challenges.
Real-World Preparation: In today's competitive landscape, it's essential for children to develop resilience and adaptability. By facing standardized tests like the STAAR, they build important skills such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and time management—invaluable in academic and real-world settings.
Supportive Learning Environment: Schools go above and beyond to create a supportive environment during testing. Teachers and staff offer encouragement, resources, and assistance to help students perform their best. Your child will benefit from this additional support network, fostering a positive attitude toward academic challenges.
Maintaining Routine and Consistency: Consistency is key to academic success. By attending school during the STAAR testing, your child maintains their daily routine, ensuring continuity in learning and minimizing disruptions. This consistency is crucial for younger children who thrive on structure and stability.
Setting a Positive Example: As parents, we play a significant role in shaping our children's attitudes towards education. By prioritizing attendance during STAAR testing, we send a powerful message that education is a priority and that perseverance in the face of challenges is essential for success.

This ensures a fair and inclusive testing experience for all students, regardless of their needs.
In conclusion, sending your child to school during STAAR testing is more than just fulfilling a requirement—it's a strategic investment in your child's academic and personal development. By participating in these assessments, your child gains valuable insights, develops essential skills, and receives the support needed to excel. So let's embrace the opportunity for growth and show our children that with determination and support, they can conquer any challenge that comes their way.
