I'm on the STLP!!! Let's dive in!
The Science Teaching Leadership Programme provides opportunities for primary schools, secondary science departments and their nominated teachers to enhance the teaching of science within school communities.
The Science Teaching Leadership Programme makes a real difference to students' science learning by:
Enhancing science programmes to better engage students and develop their science knowledge and skills.
Contributing to the professional learning and development of teachers.
Building links between schools and practising scientists.
The Science Teaching Leadership Programme supports the Government’s strategic direction for Science in Society.
The Programme is a full staff initiative that requires a commitment from the school to prioritise science as a key focus area for professional learning.
Schools nominate a teacher to develop their curriculum leadership skills in science, connect with others learning about the Nature of Science, and develop links with science organisations in their communities.

Phase 1
Terms 1 & 2 2024
What does this entail?
Being on sabbatical for Terms 1 & 2.
Working with a host organisation that uses Pūtaiao in their everyday mahi. What they do, I do. This includes field work, trips, projects, upskilling, & all round living the life of a scientist.
Attending Workshops, a Leadership Course, Noho Marae, & Symposia- this is done with the rest of my cohort!
Building upon my professional knowledge with readings, videos, reflections, etc (welcome to my reflection journal!)
Meet with my principal to discuss what I have learnt &, near the end, plan a teaching programme that will meet our learner needs.
I am going into this with an open mind. It's a chance for me to learn, push myself out of my comfort zone, & develop my leadership skills. I'm going to have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable!
What will this entail?
Returning back to school as Science Lead within my kura.
Making Science a major learning area for the next 12 - 18 months.
Implementing the plan my principal & I came up with, within my kura.
Leading meetings & professional development for my team & the rest of the staff about my learning & how they can support science in their subjects too as this is a school wide undertaking.
There will be a few reports to write about my progress & learning.
Effectively lead the Science team to meet ākonga needs.
