Mr. Bray and Mr. Williams are looking forward to this year's IB Prep HUGS

We often field questions over the summer on what students can be doing to prepare for IB Prep HUGS. Step one, enjoy your summer and relax. The school year is long with plenty of time to explore Earth's interconnections. If you, or your parents, want something to do...play a game. http://world-geography-games.com/ Regions, Countries, and Metropolitan Areas are probably the most helpful for this course.

Welcome

About IB Prep Human Geography Studies:

IB Prep Human Geography Studies will be based on the College Board’s AP Human Geography course. This course presents you with the curricular equivalent of an introductory college-level course in human geography. You will encounter content thematically rather than regionally as the course is organized around the discipline’s main subfields: cultural geography, political geography, urban geography, and economic geography. The approach is spatial and problem oriented. You will examine case studies drawn from different world regions, with an emphasis on understanding the world in which you live today. Historical information will enrich your analysis of the impacts of phenomena such as globalization, colonialism, and human-environment relationships on place, cultural landscapes, and patterns of interaction.

Examples of topics with which you will engage this year: problems of economic development and cultural change consequences of population growth, changing fertility rates, and international migration impacts of technological innovation on transportation, communication, industrialization, and other aspects of human life struggles over political power and control of territory conflicts over the demands of ethnic minorities, the role of women in society, and the inequalities between developed and developing economies explanations of why location matters to agricultural land use, industrial development, and urban problems the role of climate change and environmental abuses in shaping the human landscapes on Earth.

Westwood's IB Prep HUGS Grading Policy

Marking Period Grades

Formative Assessments = 90%.

* These assessments include: quizzes, in-class assignments, multiple-choice assessments, writings, projects, and homework assignments. Projects may be broken up into multiple tasks/grades.

Preparation/Processing = 10%.

* Successful completion of assignments to prepare students for class and assignments to synthesize learning at the end of a lesson.

Retakes/Redos

Retake opportunities are limited to the following amounts:

* One failed (below 70) formative assessment retake per marking period

* Two failed (below 70) summative assessments retakes per semester.

Late Work

A student will lose 10 points on an assignment for each school day that it is late. However, if a student turns in an assignment four or more school days after it was due AND before the last day of the marking period, the highest grade a student can earn is 60% on that assignment.

The district has decided to use the following percentage weights for calculating a final semester grade:

Marking Period 1/4 -- 28%

Marking Period 2/5 -- 28%

Marking Period 3/6 -- 28%

Semester Exam -- 16%
