Why Structured Literacy?

Our mission: No child left behind!

Why are we embarking on Structured Literacy professional development this year? Because we don’t want to leave any child behind when it comes to literacy (reading and writing) success. What this means is that we want all students to succeed and be literate by the time they leave our school.

Our end of year 2020 reading data showed that over 20% of our students aren’t reading at their year level expectation and over close to 40% of our students aren’t writing at their year level expectation.

We often get asked “But what about those students who do reach the expectation each year for reading and writing? Do they need structured literacy instruction too?” The answer to that question is this:

Structured literacy is crucial for some and beneficial for all.
