The Rome Teacher Center invites you to submit a proposal for approval to start a book study group to dialogue with colleagues and learn about new strategies and trends in education that relate directly to teaching and learning in your field or building and earn 15 in-service contact hours (1 in-service credit)

Book studies provide an opportunity to bring a group together to read, discuss, and reflect on a common text with the goals of building their professional knowledge, considering and possibly trying new practices and sharing with colleagues.

To be eligible your book study must submit the application form (click the link) which includes providing information on:

1. The title of the book (see attached list) you intend to study along with a short paragraph of how it relates to your students/building/field.

2. The names of the people (must be in same building) who will be participating. You will need a minimum of 5 people/maximum of 12.

3. Identify one participant as the group leader who will be responsible for guiding the discussions and with input from members, keeping track of submission of any required paperwork, reports, etc., as well as keeping logs of when the group meets and attendance.

4. Agree to meet as a group for a minimum of 15 hours.

5. Complete your Book Study by April 30, 2020

6. Once your book is approved you will need to provide the first meeting date and times, after which the group will be responsible for setting further dates and times.

7. Groups/group members must respond to any surveys/questionnaires we may ask you to complete and, as you delve into the book and put into action what you are learning we ask that you track student progress (Pre/post and anecdotal) to share with the Teacher Center at the end of your study (all information will be kept confidential and will only be used for Teacher Center state reports.)

They will turn in three reflection paragraphs based on their reading during the 15 hour Book Study.

8. A final brief reflection (individually or as a group) based on the following questions:

  • What aspect of your planning and preparation, classroom environment, instruction, and professional growth changes as a result of participating?

  • Describe or share how you changed or implemented something new in your teaching, lessons or instruction in your classroom and the impact for your students based on the changes.

  • Were the changes positive or negative? What indicators show this change?

  • Has the process affected the way you and your colleagues work and learn together?

  • Reflecting on the book study experience, what worked and what didn't. What can be done differently next time?
