Another Round for a new group: Step 1 Race, Racism and Anti-Racism Course 8 contact hours

Classes will be facilitated through mini-lectures and critical dialogue. Location: Zoom (All coursework will be accessed through Google Drive) Facilitator: Meredith Madden Audience: All Staff Time: 4:00 - 6:00 pm


Dates: October 4, 11, 18, 25 You must attend all sessions* 8 contact hours and CTLE Hours

This course aims to raise educator awareness for your own personal growth, but also to prepare you to create anti-racist educational spaces.

Participants will learn about key language and terms, and focus on understanding concepts of power, privilege, and oppression, racial bias, racial microaggressions, allyship, and equity.

Classes will be facilitated through mini-lectures and critical dialogue.

Step II: Race Dialogues Let’s Talk About Race: An Anti-Racist Book Study 6 contact hours

Prerequisite: This is open only to participants who have completed the Race, Racism, and Anti-Racism Course (Step 1).

Description: In Let’s Talk About Race: An Anti-Racist Book Study, participants build off the foundation of the Race, Racism, and Anti-Racism Course by applying their content knowledge to the study of So, You Want to Talk About Race, by Ijeoma Oluo anchored in anti-racist topics. In this Stage II course, participants use their racial literacy from Stage I to engage in race dialogues under guided facilitation framed by mini-lectures on the selected topics.

Participants must read select chapters of the book in advance of each class meeting. Participants will be given a copy of the book from the Rome Teacher Center.

Intended Outcomes: Participants will: 3.) Increase race-consciousness 4.) Increase identity awareness 5.) Increase race awareness 6.) Foster race dialogue skills

Step III - Anti-Racist Pedagogy: Anti-Racist Pedagogy in Action for Equitable Classroom Spaces12 contact hours

Prerequisite: This is open only to participants who have completed the Race, Racism, and Anti-Racism Course (Step 1) and Race Dialogues (Step II).

Facilitator Bio: Equity Prof: Meredith Madden the Equity Prof. Meredith Madden is an educator and

Has been doing social justice education work, including anti-racist education work, for nearly 15 years. She is a committed advocate for educational equity. She was awarded a Ph.D. in cultural foundations of education from Syracuse University. Her teaching experience includes 5 years as a middle school special education teacher in the Bronx, NY and Trumansburg, NY. As a graduate student, she was trained in Intergroup Dialogue facilitation and instructed courses across four years in the Intergroup Dialogue Program at Syracuse University. She also spent three years as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Education Studies at Hamilton College. Meredith is currently, an Assistant Professor of Education at Utica College. Through her community engagement commitments, she has created and facilitated numerous courses and workshops on social identity, racism and anti-racism, and educational equity in the Bronx, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, and Tompkins Counties. She currently works with many local school districts
