This course, based on the Utah English Language Arts (ELA) Standards emphasizes improvement in reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Composition will include the application of mechanics, grammar, usage, and vocabulary. Students will produce expository, narrative/description, and persuasive writing through their understanding of the stages of the writing process. Reading skills will be enhanced through an analysis of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and drama.

We will also explore various social issues through discussions, essays, and occasionally fictional works.

Students in Secondary Math I will formalize and extend the mathematics that they learned in the middle grades. The critical areas deepen and extend understanding of linear relationships, in part by contrasting them with exponential phenomena, and in part by applying linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend. Secondary Mathematics I uses properties and theorems involving congruent figures to deepen and extend students’ understanding of geometric knowledge from prior grades. The course ties together the algebraic and geometric ideas studied.

Students in Secondary 2 will focus on quadratic expressions, equations, and functions, extend the set of rational numbers to the set of complex numbers, study similarity and right triangle trigonometry, compare circles with their quadratic algebraic representations, and link probability and data through conditional probability and counting methods.

Students pull together and apply the accumulation of learning that they have from their previous courses, with content grouped into four critical areas. They apply methods from probability and statistics to draw inferences and conclusions from data. Students expand their repertoire of functions to include polynomial, rational, and radical functions. They expand their study of right triangle trigonometry to include general triangles. And, finally, students bring together all of their experience with functions and geometry to create models and solve contextual problems. The Mathematical Practice Standards apply throughout each course and, together with the content standards, prescribe that students experience mathematics as a coherent, useful, and logical subject that makes use of their ability to make sense of problem situations.
Mathematics of Personal Finance is designed for students in their junior or senior year of high school. The course represents content from mathematics and personal finance that are essential for students who will assume roles as consumers, money managers and members of a global workforce. Successful completion of all four quarters of this course will fulfill 1 credit of supplemental mathematics requirements.

Students observe that all substances are made of smaller parts and are themselves part of larger wholes, and that when parts come together the whole often has properties that are very different from its parts. Hands-on, inquiry-based instruction is used to help students value science as a process for obtaining knowledge based on observable evidence.
This is an integrated science course that focuses on the theme of “systems.” Topics from physical, earth, and life science are integrated to help students develop an understanding of interactions and interdependence within and between such earth systems as matter cycles, energy flows, and life webs. An introduction to the systems, anatomy, and physiology of the animal kingdom. The emphasis in this course will be on the classification of organisms in the animal kingdom based on various characteristics. Included will be an examination of the structure and function of animal organ systems, as well as behaviors and adaptations. In addition, we will focus on those organisms in the animal kingdom that are generally considered controlled by mankind, including in what capacity they serve, how they are maintained, and optimized to improve health and welfare. Finally, conservation 3 efforts of those species considered threatened or endangered will also be discussed.
This class provides the students with an understanding of the parts of a system through the study of Earth’s cycles and spheres. Earth’s place in the universe, as well as the atmospheric system, hydrosphere, geologic system, and energy systems are explored to help understand how they affect society.
This is an introductory high school course that investigates key subjects in biology, including the definition of life, DNA, the scientific method, and the classification of organisms. Bacteria, fungi, atoms, osmosis, photosynthesis, cells and their functions, genetics, and evolution are all covered, as well as invertebrates, arthropods, plants, reptiles, birds, and mammals.

Chemistry is the study of matter, its structure, properties, and composition. This course covers topics of basic chemistry including atoms, energy, chemical bonds, chemical reactions, and solutions. Students will develop an understanding of chemical concepts and determine the relevance of chemistry in their lives. Participation in lab work is required.
Geological hazards is a class that focuses on the forces of our planet, and how we are directly affected by the movements of the planet. We discuss earthquakes, ocean tides, volcanoes, tectonic plates, mitigation, and meteorology. We will be learning about the hazards of these movements but also the necessities of the earth's ever-changing landscape.
This course will focus on interactions between ecosystems, population dynamics, field studies, identifying and analyzing environmental problems, evaluating risks such problems cause, and examining solutions for resolving or preventing such problems. Students will learn how to become responsible global citizens and care for our planet.
This course explores the structure, function, and interactions of tissues, organs, and organ systems found in humans. Students develop and use models to illustrate anatomical structures and regions of the human body. Students construct explanations of how the integumentary, skeletal, and muscular systems make support, protection, and movement possible. Students analyze and interpret data to understand how the endocrine and nervous systems make information processing possible. Students ask questions about the relationships between the cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, and urinary systems. Students obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the male and female reproductive systems that make conception, development, and birth of human life possible.
Prerequisite: Food and Nutrition
This course teaches scientific principles and how those principles can be applied to improve the health of individuals and families. Instruction is given concerning the physical, microbiological, ad chemical principles that affect the food we eat.
Throughout this course, students will take upon the role of a historian by examining primary and secondary sources. The course will examine the state of Utah through four social studies disciplines: history, geography, economics, and civics. Topics include the development of complex Native American ways of life to the beginnings of European exploration, exploration, and settlement of Utah by Mormons and other pioneers, the transition from territory to statehood, and Utah’s political, social, and economic development from statehood to the present.
This class will cover all 63 National Parks, their history as well as various aspects to the parks to entice students to possibly visit them at some point in their future. We will also cover the History of the Parks Department and how America was the first country to come up with the idea to designate lands as National Parks. Students will also learn how the Parks Department has changed over the years, the various jobs within the department and possible career opportunities.
Throughout this course, students will examine and analyze primary and secondary sources, take notes, and participate in discussions and debates. The course will address the events and issues in the United States from the Age of Exploration through the Reconstruction, emphasizing the 18th and 19th centuries. Topics include, but are not limited to, American Indian life, European exploration and colonization, the Revolutionary War, constitutional issues, nation-building, westward expansion, the Civil War, and Reconstruction.
Geography is the study of physical and human characteristics of the Earth's people, places and environments. Students will develop geographic thinking skills by studying interactions and connections in geography as well as how geography played a vital role in beginning civilizations. Students will also understand the history behind states and national borders and also how human geography and migrations has evolved over time.
During this course, students will analyze events and issues in world history from the earliest evidence of human existence to modern times. Students will be expected to make connections between historical events and current issues to deepen their understanding of past civilizations and the world today. Topics include, but are not limited to, the Neolithic Revolution, the dawn of civilization, the development of world religions, patterns in world trade, contributions of classical civilizations, the diffusion of technology, colonization and imperialism, global conflict, modern revolutions, and independence movements, and current trends in globalization.
In US HIstory II, we will discuss and highlight events and issues in US History from the late industrial revolution to modern times. Topics may include the Industrial Revolution, the Progressive movement, Imperialism, the World Wars, the Great Depression, the Cold War, and the Civil Rights Movement. We will use critical thinking skills, group work, and creative problem solving among other skills to learn these topics.
In Government and Citizenship we will discuss the major ideas, protections, and structures that affect life as an American citizen. Students will practice skills such as critical thinking, inquiry-based learning, creative problem solving, and group work to help learn these concepts.
This class is designed to teach a specific topic in US History using mainly film as well as other sources. We will be watching full-length feature films as well as documentaries. Semester one will be Civil Rights, Semester two will be The Cold War.
In this course, students will learn not only about Mental Health concepts but also Social and Physical Health concepts as well. Students will also be taken through the History of Modern Psychology and will be presented with many social dynamics and sociological situations in which they can engage with their classmates and learn about the various perspectives and points of view their peers have.
This course is designed to increase awareness of college and career pathways through hands-on projects, guest speakers, and exploration of interests, skills, and aptitudes. Students will investigate high-skilled, in-demand and/or emerging jobs in the labor market while developing essential workplace skills for future academic and career goals.

Health Education will foucs on health foundations and protective factors of healthy self, mental and emotional health, safety and disease prevention. substance abuse prevention, nutrition, and human development.
No dance experience required. However, students must dance to earn a grade. Students will engage in different dance styles. There will also be time for developing student solos and individual skills. This class is good for anybody looking to have fun and willing to learn new styles.

This course will cover beginner to intermediate competency in lifetime activities, using concepts associated with positive participation in physical activity, demonstrating appropriate responsible behavior while engaged in physical activity, and provide an opportunity to challenge students.
The class provides the opportunity for students to become educated with the weight room. They will learn proper form and technique and range of motion exercises. They will become familiar with the major muscle groups and how to exercise them appropriately.
In this class students will learn about yoga philosophy, identify and demonstrate a variety of yoga poses such as: hip openers, upper body, lower body balancing, core, inversions, and backbends. They will also learn how proper technique and alignment increase flexibility, stability, and strength and prevent injury. The course will cover physical, emotional, and social health and also include breath work and meditation techniques to achieve a mentally clear, emotionally calm, and stable state.
In this class students learn the art of synchronized jumps, dynamic stunts, and spirited chants, all under the guidance of experienced coaches. Students receive their report cards every day and have the opportunity to get help in classes if they have a C- or lower on that day. Weekly lessons in social-emotional learning are also given.

Students will learn the principles of personal money management, including budgeting, managing accounts, and the role of credit and its impacts on personal finances.

Student Council is for students that have been elected by their peers as leaders for the school. Students will learn leadership skills, plan school events, and support students, faculty, and administration alike. Students are expected to be present daily and be willing to put in time outside of school hours. There is a fee associated with this class.
Prerequisite - 10th grade or higher, must have a driver permit before class starts.
The Driver Education Program prepares students to achieve their Utah Driver's License. The program is divided into two parts that fulfill State Requirements. One part is the Classroom Instruction Requirement, and the second part is the Behind the Wheel Requirement.
Classroom Instruction is delivered via Canvas and includes assignments, reading, lectures, projects, quizzes, and tests. Students will be able to work at their own pace. The Classroom Instruction reinforces the information in the Utah Driver Handbook.
Behind the Wheel Instruction is completed while the certified driving instructor is seated next to students in a driver education road car. Observation hours are earned during driving time with other students in the driver education car. Students are required to hold a valid learner permit issued by the State of Utah to participate in the Behind the Wheel program. Mrs. Shelley schedules students to participate in the Behind the Wheel program after they have obtained their learner permit. Drives are held before or after school and on Saturdays, depending on student/teacher availability.
10th grade students must have a 3.5 GPA to take CE courses. 11th and 12th grade students must have a 3.0 GPA to take CE courses.
Enrollment at UVU is required but classes are held at Rockwell.

Introduces students to the variability of human behavior cross-culturally and provides an understanding of the holistic approach to human behavior. Explores interrelationships, in a variety of cultural contexts, between beliefs, economic structures, sexuality, eating habits, ecology, politics, living arrangements, psychology, symbolism, and kinship.
Develops an appreciation of the visual arts by investigating the elements and principles of art, art criticism, art production, and the history of art. Includes written critiques and assignments. Requires students to identify works of arts and describe their significance in writing. May be delivered hybrid.
Presents the management skills necessary to be a fixed based operator and entry-level manager for scheduled airlines in the national aviation system. Teaches management functions, marketing, financing, organization and administration, flight operations, maintenance, safety, and liability. Provides hands-on experience of management styles through evaluations and critiques of local airlines and airport facilities.
Introduces major themes and concepts of biology including cell and molecular biology, genetics, diversity, evolution, and ecology. Provides students with necessary information and skills to critically evaluate what they hear, read, and see in the living world; communicate clearly; and apply methods to interpret data for making informed decisions concerning the role of biology in a world of which they are a part.
Provides an introduction to basic concepts, theories, principles of oral communication as applied to a variety of speaking situations. Develops competence in oral communication through performance, as applied to critical thinking skills, arrangement of ideas, and use of evidence and reasoning to support claims. Explains how culture influences the perception of effective public speaking.

Introduces the fundamentals of criminal investigations. Examines the techniques commonly utilized by investigative personnel for crimes against property and persons to include case management and documentation, interacting with victims, witnesses and suspects, and crime scene analysis.May be delivered online.
Studies Forensic Science and multiple forensic disciplines as they correlate with criminal investigations. Teaches the identification and importance of multiple types of physical evidence typically found at a crime scene and how that evidence is used to provide a link between the victim, suspect, and crime scene. Explains the proper techniques needed to document a crime scene and physical evidence. Provides the process of taking the evidence from the scene and the scientific analysis of the evidence, which is completed at the crime laboratory.
Introduces students to the study of American mass media. Provides a critical overview of the main themes in the study of mass media, including the historical development of the media; the social, political, economic, and organizational contexts, impacts, and significance of the media; the nature of media content; its complex relationships to mass audiences; and the legal/regulatory context in which the media operate.
Teaches rhetorical knowledge and skills, focusing on critical reading, writing, and thinking. Introduces writing for specific academic audiences and situations. Emphasizes writing as a process through multiple drafts and revisions. May be delivered hybrid and/or online.

Studies planet earth: its materials, structure, dynamics, and surface features. Taken alone it is designed for non-science students who want a broad introduction to earth science and a greater appreciation of their physical surroundings. Taken in conjunction with laboratory exercises in GEO 1015, the class is sufficiently rigorous to articulate as an introductory geology class.
Studies the media and compositional elements of the various art forms (literature, music, visual arts, theater, film, dance, and architecture), for greater understanding and enjoyment. Teaches how to interpret artistic meaning by analyzing artworks formally as well as in their historical contexts, such as the predominant subject matters and styles of their period. Encourages students to integrate the arts into their daily lives habitually, so that they become lifelong learners and educators.

For students interested in various health care professions. Considers basic principles of human nutrition. Studies factors that influence nutritive requirements and maintenance of nutritional balance. Examines relationships between proper nutrition and social, mental and physical well-being.
