ROCKLAND - The boys' junior vs senior volleyball tournament was hosted on Thursday, March 13.
Mrs. Casey Levesque, guidance counselor and senior class advisor, thinks that the tournament went really well and said, “I think it was awesome and the momentum will be there for future classes.”
This was inspired by the senior class officers because they wanted to do something opposite of the girls powderpuff. With the help of some of the officers who play on the team, it became a natural joint effort for this tournament to get started.
This event took about a month to fully plan, but had been an idea for a lot longer.
Mrs. Levesque realizes how excited this event had gotten everyone, and after the event, has seen junior boys be excited in hopes of doing this again in their senior year.
In years past, boys have tried to start up a boys volleyball team, in which helped to push the idea more.
“This reinvigorated it because I do know some of the boys that played were a part of the original idea of a boys volleyball team… if we continue to do this for a couple of years, it will continue that trend and get the boys more invested in it,” Mrs. Levesque added.
Also, traditions like the boys' volleyball tournament and the girls' Powderpuff through students' wants and desires help the creation of traditions.
Senior Class President Jessica Gillooly, helped plan the event and said the biggest challenge was to find everyone to play or volunteer, but in the end, it was an amazing turnout.
Approximately 20-25 boys participated in the event, as there were 6-8 players on a team.
Gillooly was able to promote this event through Instagram, which helped to pick up a lot of people.
“I was the biggest communicator with the coaches of teams, so I had to make sure everyone knew the rules and that they all felt like their ideas were heard, too,” Gillooly said.
In formatting the rules, seniors Savannah Milso and Rylee Freeman were the biggest help in doing this, as they are the RHS volleyball captains, and Milso plays club as well.
Senior Class Secretary, Megan Joyce, also plays volleyball and stepped in to referee when it was very helpful.
The most memorable moment for Gillooly was “watching all [her] friends play, even just at practice. It was nice to see everyone getting along and just having a fun time overall,” Gillooly said.
There includes two practices before the tournament day where the junior team play each other and seniors plays each other and then winners play.
Gillooly hopes this continues in the future, and suggests that future classes have a plan for getting professional referees.
