ROCKLAND- As all the holidays approach, students and staff start to get more in spirit.
On Halloween Day most of the RHS departments decided to decorate their hallways according to themes they all chose. The science hallway’s spooky theme was the television show Stranger Things, the history teachers dressed as different holidays, Student Services was different musical eras or genres, the guidance department was the Red Sox, the front office was M&Ms, and the theme for the math department was "Numberjacks".
Students were sent out a survey to vote for the best hallway decorations and the winners were announced at the end of the day. The Science hallway won with their competitive decorations.
Science Department Chair Ms. Julia DiCanzio said, “Ms. Leighton thought of it originally because she thought of ways we could all dress up as characters without having to spend a ton of money.”
The Science department, along with the help of the Environmental Club, helped with the decorations and it took around an hour and a half to decorate.
The winners won candy, little dessert snack cakes, and plenty of bags of chips.
During this time of year, students and staff are excited for the holidays and breaks. With all these fun activities we start to have, Teacher superlatives for the 2024 Yearbook are also something where teachers are recognized for different categories.
Some categories are "Most Quotable", won by Mr. Frederick Damon, "Best Classroom Decorations," won by English teacher Mr. Chad Bigsby, and "Most Supportive" won by family and consumer science teacher Ms. Adrienne Donovan.
Ms. Donovan has only been teaching at RHS for five years and won a superlative three out of the five. The other two were best storytellers.
She was “totally shocked” when winning most supportive. “It’s an honor to always be recognized, and makes you feel good as a teacher that you’ve done something good. It puts a smile on my face [and] makes me want to come to work the next day.”
According to Ms. Donovan, the categories change every year, so many teachers can be recognized..
Fun activities and competitions like these help students who are getting less motivated with the holiday breaks coming up, but this helps them be more involved.
