ROCKLAND- As the weather gets nicer, athletes, and current and new coaches prepare for the upcoming spring sports season.
On February 26, Athletic Director Mr. Dan Kimball sent out an email regarding spring sports to all students. He addressed details that are important to know when signing up, including how to register and all the sports available to participate in this season.
He explained that Rockland’s offering of spring sports include, “girls’ tennis, boys’ tennis, girls’ and boys’ track, softball, baseball, boys’ and girls’ lacrosse. I think it's important for kids to try a sport they haven’t yet or have not got a chance to.”
Everyone who will be playing sports this upcoming season should know that tryouts and deadlines are coming up soon.
Kimball said, “March 17 is the last day to register and March 18 is the first day of tryouts. We do not let in late registrations, which kind of makes it harder on everyone else.”
For anyone interested in a spring sport, the coaches to contact for more information are listed at the bottom of this article.
Dave Taylor and Mrs. Susan Gormely are the only coaches who not do work at Rockland High School, as Dave Taylor works for the Rockland Highway Department and Mrs. Gormely is a Rockland Middle School sixth grade science teacher.
With new coaching additions to both the track team and boys’ tennis team, the spring season is ready to go.
Ms. Chelsea Savage, a high school science teacher, has coached winter track for the last several years but will take the spot as coach for the first time in the spring. She is taking the spot of Mr. Robert Murphy, who retired last spring.
Ms. Savage said she is excited for the upcoming season as coach.
She explained, “I think we are going to have a really good season and it is going to lay a lot of groundwork for next year.”
Other details all spring athletes should know is how the new Rockland turf field is going to be used this season. It opened in the fall for soccer but will be used for the first time fully this spring.
Mr. Kimball said, “[The turf] is going to be a huge asset for us, we are gonna utilize it for boys and girls lacrosse. It will be nice for us to actually have a turf field because there’s nothing to be concerned about due to weather issues.”
Maddie Kesler, a freshman, is a new addition to the track team. She explained her hopes for this upcoming season.
Kesler said, “I am excited to get active and back into sports again.”
Other important details include the price to register for these sports. The annual user fee is $250. This means if you already played a fall or winter sport, you do not have to pay for a spring one.
