ROCKLAND- Dog Blocks have been taking place every other Thursday, and two of the most popular ones have been History of Rockland and Make and Take crafts.
Dog Block is a way for students to find out what they are interested in and some clubs they are able to join.
Students choose an activity they would like to be a part of, and every other Thursday they get assigned a block to go to.
Guidance Counselors, Ms. Casey Morrison and Ms. Jill Delaney are doing the Make and Take craft activity.
When deciding what they wanted to do for Dog Block, both were brainstorming things they would want to do if they were in high school that would be fun for everyone.
So far they have done pumpkin painting and in the future hope to do caramel apples, ornaments for Christmas, cookie decorating for Valentine’s Day, and hand turkeys.
Ms. Morrison's favorite part, “has been working with different kids and seeing different students that I don’t normally get to see. We sometimes get so stuffed in our offices that we don’t get to see the rest of the school.
Ms. Delaney added, “I like seeing students even outside of my caseload but I also like seeing students even on my caseload just outside of guidance.”
As it isn’t fully planned out, both will take suggestions and ideas for the next one and are open to trying new things whenever.
Grace Farry, a sophomore who signed up for the pumpkin painting, enjoyed that it was something festive and having a break from her usual schedule.
She painted a pumpkin with a group of her friends using paints and markers and making faces and designs.
She now hopes to do another craft activity next time as she had a lot of fun.
Mr. Fred Damon is doing the History of Rockland with Mr. Richard Little and is enjoying the stories and pictures that Mr. Little has.
Originally, Mr. Damon was planning on helping out different people in each Dog Block, but when Mr. Little came up with the idea of it, it sounded great to Mr. Damon as they always talk about the old Rockland together.
Mr. Damon’s favorite part has been seeing the old pictures of the town and the vintage photos to see what it used to look like.
He said, “It’s been awesome and I thought I had great stories but his are even better and he has had a ton of stuff like photos and things like that so it’s really been a great experience and a good numbers by the kids as well.”
For the next Dog Block, they hope to focus on the information they have about the old buildings and the famous people from Rockland.
The most impressive thing Mr. Damon has learned is that you can take a bus from Rockland all the way to Boston.
Logan Finn, a senior who signed up for History of Rockland, had fun learning about the town and at first signed up because he thought it would be funny with the teachers involved.
Something that he learned was that the street we are on used to be filled with trees and an old mansion.
