ROCKLAND- On December 1-2, the Rockland High School Drama Club will be performing the play Our Town, written by Thornton Wilder, in the high school auditorium.
The choice of play was made based on the maturity of the students and a desire to add variation to the types of plays that our students perform in Rockland. For the last two years, the Drama Club has performed comedies for the fall play.
Mr. Steven Bergman, director, and Rockland High’s chorus teacher, said that based on the selection of students that was provided to him and their level of experience.
Students participating in the play seem to share a similar viewpoint about the selection of the play.
Senior McKenna Maher shared that, “She was excited to sink her teeth into something with emotion.”
Maher, who was cast in the lead role of Emily Webb, and junior John Vaz was cast as George Gibbs.
Mr. Bergman said that during the planning and casting process, he chose Maher and Vaz as leads “due to their past experience, and overall compatibility with the role.”
Students seem to not mind the rehearsal schedule currently as it has been a bonding experience.
Maher said that they rehearse, “about three to four times a week, each ranging from an hour to two hours, and allows the cast to bond.”
Before coming to see them play, Mr. Bergman shared that Our Town “is a reflection of a town in Petersburg, NH between 1901 and 1913… and could represent any town, including Rockland. This may allow the audience to be able to make connections with the play based on familiarity.”
Tickets to attend this production will be going on sale in the first week of December and will cost $10 for adults, and $6 for students.
