ROCKLAND- Rockland High’s Multicultural Club this year is working towards making a welcoming and inclusive environment for students of all backgrounds.
They discuss traditions, languages, and music of many cultures, sparking interest in many. It is a fun space where students get to learn about one another.
The club is led by EL teacher Ms. Digna Nunez every Tuesday in room 227.
Ms. Nunez explained, “It brings a positive experience by having that exchange between the students and the different cultures… like talking about music, perhaps food differences or celebrations.”
Even though there have not been many meetings, as last Tuesday was their first official meeting, Ms. Nunez shared many exciting things.
These included cultural bingo, learning how to embrace the community, and also introducing the club to the Bulldog Block are some activities Ms. Nunez has planned this year for the club.
Many shared that before joining the club, they didn't know many people where they could comfortably share the culture, and within the club, they have found a sense of belonging.
Through the club, students have connected with more classmates than they would have probably talked to otherwise.
Freshman Clara Santos said, “It helped me know that my culture is not the only one in the school…we just kind of need someone that relates to me.”
Even though coming from different parts of the world, students find they share things in common, including celebrations, foods they eat, traditions, and activities they do.
Besides learning about other cultures, members make sure that everyone is comfortable and welcomed.
Ms. Nunez said, “It’s a good spirit here. Then no matter what’s going on with you… We got you, and we are there for you. Whether you're crying, stressed, or overwhelmed.”
Overall, the club’s ultimate goal is to make everyone feel proud of their heritage.
