ROCKLAND- Ms. Mary Jane Jolicoeur has been a substitute teacher for 11 years.
Ms. Jolicoeur used to teach preschool through high school but currently substitutes for classrooms in Rockland High School and occasionally Rockland Middle School.
She currently lives in Whitman but was born in Quincy and raised in Holbrook.
Currently, she only substitutes for Rockland schools, and she has been a substitute teacher for over 10 years and this is her 11th year in Rockland.
Substituting was not the first career for Ms. Jolicoeur.
“I worked in administrative jobs. I worked in property management and then I had a small business for about 10 years and when I sold that I became a substitute teacher,” she said.
Freshman Aubrey Glover said that one of Ms. Jolicoeur’s best qualities is that she is funny and always talks to the class.
Freshman Gus Nogueira likes how she is always nice to anyone she interacts with.
“I like her personality, she’s nice. No matter who you are she will be really nice to you,” Nogueria said.
One of Ms. Jolicoeur’s favorite RHS memories is the school spirit during school events.
Ms. Jolicoeur said, “One of the pep rallies we had. Just to see the enthusiasm in all the students, This was probably maybe five years ago. And to see the cheerleaders perform.”
Glover wishes Ms. Jolicoeur would sub for her class more often.
Glover said, “I get happy when I find out Ms.Jay is subbing for our class because she is my favorite substitute teacher and because I know she will make the class better.”
A good memory Nogueira had of Ms. Jolicoeur was when she was subbing for one of his classes in 8th grade.
“One time in 8th grade, it was a fun time because Ms.Jay was there, and she helped us with any questions we had about our work,” Nogueira said.
Ms. Jolicoeur has a few hobbies, including swimming, drawing, sports like tennis, and many outdoor activities.
One of the things she likes about being a substitute teacher is that every day is different.
“You have to be a very flexible person to do the job, every day is different, every school is different. The fact that you can see new faces every day… every hour of every day,” Ms. Jolicoeur said.
