ROCKLAND- The Rockland Golf team is having its best season in more than a decade, making the playoffs for the first time since 2012.
The growth and development of the golf team this season are owed to Mr. Greg Banks, Rockland High School graduate who himself was a captain in 2016. Mr. Banks is now a teacher at Bridges Academy.
He said that he likes being able to give back to his school and help more students.
“I think my favorite thing about being the golf coach is I'm a former Rockland High School golf player myself so I get to coach the team, that I got played for in high school,” he said.
Mr. Banks took over a couple of years ago, and more players try out each year.
Rockland High School Athletic Director, Mr. Dan Kimball said, “Coach Banks has had an immediate impact on the culture of the team and also the expectations, He has done a nice job on that, and leaders on the team have done a great job setting the expectations for the season.” The team has changed from having seniors to more underclassmen, which means there is a likelihood that the group will bring experience for upcoming seasons.
Senior Joey Mann is the only senior on the team this season. He started playing golf in his sophomore year. He watched his friends play, and later on, he started playing. As the team grows, he is really looking forward to winning the state championship.
“My biggest strength is probably getting people to laugh and my weakness is putting,” Mann said.
