ROCKLAND- The Girls’ varsity Lacrosse team has been going through a series of losses but they are working hard to improve and grow to win in the near future.
The coach for the junior varsity team is Emily Beatrice and the varsity coach is Sue Gormley. Beatrice is a 2017 graduate of Rockland High.
The captains for the JV team are freshmen Mackenzie Fulton and Anna Santos. The captains for the varsity team are seniors Emma Radzik and MK Leoncavallo.
The seniors have been putting in a lot of effort and hard work this season.
Fulton said, “The seniors have been giving it their all. They really do try hard every game and they never let their spirits die out [on] the field.”
The 7th and 8th graders have joined the team this year and it has been going well.
“They are doing awesome. We brought [the] 7th and 8th grade up and it's brand new because they are all so young but I think it’s going to be a good team in the next couple of years,” said coach and Rogers Middle School science teacher, Ms. Sue Gormley.
The team captains have been playing an important role in leading the rest of the team and being their role models.
“To help everyone out and right now since our program is really young with the 8th graders and 7th graders and freshmen playing I’ve kind of helped them through this season just to get them started and they’ve been doing well,” Leoncavallo said.
Ms. Gormley is very proud of the seniors and thinks they are doing a great job.
“The dedication, they work well together, and their sportsmanship,” she said.
One achievement Leoncavallo is most proud of this season is that, individually, she made it in the top 75 for The Enterprise.
While the season has been challenging for the team, their sportsmanship, and teamwork have been an asset to the team.
Leoncavallo said, “the game against EB was not the hardest team to play but they are the most level with us so it was actually a good game where you had to actually fight to win it and so was Abington we were really close with them.”
Ms. Gormley’s set goal/record for this year is to win at least two games and they have six games left.
