ROCKLAND- The Environmental Club has big plans for the future to be able to get more students involved and to help the world.
The Environmental Club works on things about climate change, environment-friendly ways to decorate, watching shows and podcasts, and more.
Science teachers Ms. Julia DiCanzio and Ms. Ashley Leighton, run the Environmental Club, and have loved getting to know the kids outside of school and just having fun.
Both have been running the club for three years after taking it over from another teacher, and realize that the biggest thing with the environmental issues is the awareness that is spread.
Ms. DiCanzio said, “I think the more regularly people see things that they can change or things they can contribute to, the more likely they are to care about it.”
Ms. Leighton’s expectations with this club are that it is student-led and students can speak up to put input in projects and interests.
“We want to be helpful and supportive more rather than telling them what to do so that they really care about the projects that we do,” Ms. DiCanzio added.
Over time, both Ms. DiCanzio and Ms. Leighton hope that more students get involved in this club.
Some ideas they have to try and get student interest are having a clean-up day and community service. Some projects that they have done are making signs on the rail trail and recycling can projects.
They have also started sending out a monthly newsletter to give the school community insights into the world of environmentalism and ideas on how they can help.
The environmental club meets on Mondays after school in room 236. Any student who wants to get involved can go to any Monday meeting to join in.
