ROCKLAND- When Mr. Sean Carney returns to RHS as an English teacher, he'll be bringing his Bulldog Pride and some unique interests and hobbies.
Mr. Carney, a 2016 Rockland High graduate, will be the first new English teacher at RHS in eleven years.
Since graduating college, he worked at Braintree High School and is finishing his second year at Cathedral High School in South Boston.
At Fitchburg State University, he started with a Creative Writing major but then switched to English and Secondary Education. He will be starting his Master's Degree at the University of Massachusetts Boston this fall.
"I was thinking about what kind of long-term impact I was going to have on people and I felt teaching was a better career path," Mr. Carney said.
While a student at RHS, he played baseball for two years, and he also boxed at South Shore Boxing Club in Whitman.
He wanted to be a teacher because he "had a lot of good teachers who were very influential role models in my life growing up."
"There is that human, person-to-person connection and you get to help people through the rough times in their life and develop into the best person they can be," Mr. Carney said.
He applied to RHS because he always wanted to be back near his hometown.
"I know the culture, I love the teachers... having them as colleagues would make me a better teacher. I want to be part of the community. I know there is a very strong school spirit in Rockland, and I want to be part of that as well."
Mr. Carney had Ms. Carol Cahill for freshman English and will be coming in after her retirement to take over her classroom.
While at RHS, Mr. Carney enjoyed pep rallies and his favorite subject in school was English; he loved reading poetry, stories, and plays. He also liked class discussions, history, and art class.
Mr. Carney loves teaching the works of William Shakespeare, and he likes lessons that are close readings of important passages, and discussions on themes.
"I love hearing student voices in the classroom and being able to have the students talk to each other and talk to me and decipher the text together. Those are always my favorite days," he said.
He would like to get involved with any club or activity to be part of the community but is leaning towards something artistic, like Images Magazine or a writing club.
While it's a far cry from his childhood dream job of a professional wrestler, Mr. Carney is excited to join the staff of RHS.
"Come say hi, introduce yourselves. I'm really looking forward to meeting all the Rockland kids, and I can't wait for next year," he said.
