ROCKLAND- Now that spring has arrived at Rockland High School, so have spring sports including Boys' Tennis.
The team is combined with students from East Bridgewater, with each school having six players each making a team of 12.
The team has matches twice a week and there are plans to increase the number of matches to 3-4 times a week in the future.
Coach Chris Beatrice is hopeful for the team's success.
He said, "We are 4-2 and ranked 12th in the division, and he believes they are likely to reach the MIIA tournament due to having a “solid team from top to bottom.”
Senior Captain Petr Quinn believes that joining the team was the “best decision I’ve made in school.”
As team captain, he helps the team, setting examples for them and “warming up the boys before the coach arrives.”
Quinn joined the team in 8th grade because “I just wanted to play on a high school team.”
He's hopeful that the team does well this year, saying how they only have two losses with one of them being the first game they played.
Quinn said, “Last year we made the quarterfinals, this year hopefully we make the semifinals.”
His advice for new players is to get through the first month, saying that it's the hardest and once you're past it you’ll start having fun.
Sophomore Mohammad Asad agrees with that, and said, “once you finish the first few weeks you will have fun.”
Asad started playing tennis at Rockland this year and playing in general in 8th grade since he's a fan of the sport.
For Asad, tennis is unique compared to the other sports offered at Rockland since it's not a field game and, “You play individually, there is a team but winning or losing is on you.”
